I want to get some more detailed information about the difficulties, the rate of students who go to graduate school, and the teaching quality of it

And how many students take math classes who don't need them for their major?

Kristina: I don't know. I'm guessing it's an extremely low number.

cos:

I'd say the undergraduate mathematics at Brown is not as hardcore as it is in MIT/Harvard. We definitely don't have something like Math 55 at Harvard, aka the most difficult undergraduate mathematics course in the country. But, I personally know many mathematics major that use this as a window of opportunity to take graduate level mathematics class. (Every now and then there'll be a kid who has done abstract algebra + analysis out of high school).

Rate of students that go to Mathematics graduate school? What's the population we're talking here? The whole student body? Out of only Mathematics concentrator? (Plus, shouldn't you be asking the success rate of graduate school placement? :p)

No comment. Seriously.

hey, i have a question along these lines..

if I did IB Math HL (about 6-7 level) and also did IB Further Math SL (which is studying ALL the options that Math HL offer), would I be prepared enough for Brown's math course...?

I don't know anything about the IB program but yes, you'll be prepared. We start courses at first semester calc and go straight through to PhD level work.

Also, re: IB, I did Math HL, and you can place out of a few courses. Because IB Math covers various topics rather than solely calculus, you might place into a lower course than a student who'd done well in Calc BC, but, since you've also done Further Math, you should be set to go into pretty advanced calc (and otherwise) courses.

I've yet to take a math class, but... :p

P.S. Here's a helpful site: Brown Math Department Calculus Placement FAQ

I heard further maths is astronomical in terms of difficulty. my guidance counselor says its the iB's hardest class and exam, followed by physics HL.

hmm i would say that your guidance counselor is quite right.. im not doing too well in it though... kinda disappointing but ah wel..

im not planning to do math to become an engineer or something.. if i do take math, i want to take it out of pleasure..
