i was recently accepted into emory, colgate, and boston and some other schools, but these are the ones i'm looking at now. I know these are very different colleges, but i seem to like each one the same. i plan on going pre med while majoring in economics and biology. I know all three of these schools are strong in these fields. which is more prestigious among med schools? which is harder? i don't know. anything will help. thanks.

Boston University has an awesome Med program. I am not familiar with liberal arts colleges though. But Boston...yup...awesome!

Boston U or BC? Either Way it should be between Emory and Colgate which are the stronger colleges... both would be fantastic for premed it just comes down to feel (medium sized college- Emory or LAC- Colgate)

what do people think about emory, northwestern v. colgate? academics (undecided)... sociallyetc.

Well, according to collegeboard 25% of Emory undergrads continue education at a med school whereas 3% of Colgate undergrads continue grad education at med school. I personally think that Emory is better for premed.

25% means major competition

what about just plain old education...not for med school

thanks for all the info guys. does anyone know what the med school acceptance rates are for these schools.

I called the pre-med advisor, and he told me that about 53% of all medical school applicants from Emory are accepted to medical school. By the way, he said that this percentage varies greatly with GPA...if your GPA is 3.5-3.9 and your MCAT score is 30-36, then you have probably 75% or higher chance. And, most medical school applicants apply to 15-20 medical schools.

there are some schools that have sophomore early assurance programs, like Georgetown, Drexel, and Rutgers New Brunswick. Usually, state schools have this kind of program.

What about the difference between Emory and a Liberal Arts School like Davidson? I cannot clearly define it.. The size is the primary difference but what else.. grad school acceptance rate? Job offers? Average pay ? I can never figure that out... I fear that Emory might have big classes and ill be just a number :-(

sickofflorida : The 53% get into medical school sounds extremely low to me, and I believe it is somehwere in the mid to upper 80's get into atleast one med school. And with stats like 3.75 GPA and 30-36 MCATS the percentage was around 90-95. Can somone find out for sure because this would really scare me

91% of students with a 3.5 or above and 30 or above on the MCAT were accepted into med school.

Boston, I believe, is the most prestigious compared to Emory and Colgate. Boston has been revered by the world for centuries while Emory is just a growing school. Also, you should consider the atmosphere, location, size, cost, and etc. But if I were in your position, I would choose Boston without a doubt. Good luck in your decision making.

I think you are completely wrong about the prestige level of Boston University compared to Emory, although it does depend on what department. But for premed especially Emory > BU any day, and even though rankings do not paint the entire picture of a college Emory @ #20 is much higher than BU.

Jack that sounds much better to me, where did you get that stat from, Emory website?

What? BU was chartered in 1869, more than 30 years after Emory. Neither has been "revered for centuries" -- 1869 wasn't that long ago.

patfan10: it was on one of the handouts handed out at the career seminar information session at the admitted student day at emory (atleast, that's where I got the identical statistic)

it all depends on whether the school is Boston COLLEGE or Boston UNVERSITY. boston college has much more prestige than boston university. as for whether to go to boston college or emory, it all depends on what you want in a school..im a sophomore at emory but i visited a friend at BC. BC and emory were similar in the type of students they have, but different in that BC is much more into sports and BC students go off campus more (because boston is much more accessable than atlanta). also, not to state the obvious...but atlanta is much warmer than boston!

I think that Emory clearly has the edge here.

BU is a large university that is not as well respected as either Colgate or Emory. In strictly academic terms, either of these two insititutions would be fine for bio. However, the opportunities for internships and research are much stronger at Emory. Not only is there more research on the campus but there are so many well regarded institutions nearby where students get internships like the Center for Disease Control or the Yerkes Primate Lab.
