Help! I need a clever thread title to catch your attention!

Hehehe... Worked like a charm...

Anyway, I'm a rising senior and a bit anxious about that whole bothersome college admissions thing so help me out and chance me!

Letsee, here are my stats...

GPA: About 4.9ish on a 5.4 scale? Top 10% at least, I'm pretty sure, though my school doesn't do class rank.

SAT: 2250, 800 math, 700 CR, 750 writing
SAT Subjects: 800 math II, 800 chem, 800 physics

Don't have an abundance of ECs; I've been on math team and science olympiad since 9th, won or at least placed in a bunch of local math competitions, qualified for AIME, placed 2nd in my region for the AAPT Physics Bowl, and am currently involved in some very extensive research with one of the physics professors at the university.

Oh yeah, and I play cello and do a bunch of random math/science tutoring in school.

Also taking Physics C at the university this summer, (since my school doesn't offer it) and Applied Linear Algebra and Calc III during this coming school year.

Scored 5s on AP Calc BC and AP Physics B.

Oh! And this is what I feel makes me stand out: I am an Asian male from New York with an interest in mathematics, physics, and engineering. I love being unique. Seriously.

Interested in :
Harvey Mudd
Olin
Caltech
Rice
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell
...And I could also use a couple of safeties or other recommendable schools.

Thanks in advance!

Good chances at all except Caltech and Cornell. Both are reaches.

I agree with cory123

the schools you've listed are all within fairly reasonable reach (with the exception of caltech, and cornell to a lesser degree).

for an unconventional place like olin, though, you're going to need to demonstrate that you are more than "an asian male from new york with an interest in mathematics, physics, and engineering." your chances at cornell would also certainly go up if your essays and recs set you apart from the legions of people like you (no offense but like you said, your set of interests/ECs/grades aren't exactly unique for admissions committees)

I'm gonna have to go with a big DISAGREE here. Olin and Mudd are harder to get into than Cornell. Please please please posters if you are going to give chances at least know what you are talking about.

But I think Mudd and Olin are more holistic with admissions and more willing to accept kids with interesting ideas.

I really don't think Mudd and Olin are more holistic than Cornell. Cornell is an ivy league school after all and they are known for holistic admissions. The OP doesn't really say anything that would make it seem like he would vastly benefit from holistic admissions anyway.

Olin is probably as hard to get into as Caltech now. It's so small but many people apply because of the free tuition.

cornell is not that much of a reach do not listen to those naysayers

By "holistic" and "willing to accept kids with interesting ideas," what do you mean? Essays and such? Interviews?

Right now, I'm most interested in Harvey Mudd and Olin, so I was wondering how I might amazing my application a bit more to show my interest. And maybe even stand out from the "legions of people" like me. Damn stereotypes!

Bring

My
Post

Can anyone say: Asain math geek???
But you know, they all DO end up being accepted at some great engineering school - don't sweat it.
