Alright so, I know I have time but I'm currently a sophomore and I'm stuck between pursuing computer science or biology(medicine) as a career. I'm interested in both but I hear that a job as a computer scientist isn't as stable as a job as a well off doctor. So right now I'm applying for APs and the length of the school day is making me decide between AP Compsci and AP Chem. I really want to take AP Compsci but I don't want to miss out on taking AP Chem as a junior either. Also, I hear people telling me that some colleges offer double majoring or minoring in something and majoring in others? I'm unsure as to what both of those are and I want to know if there's a way I can concentrate on both subject areas when I'm in college. Need some help!!

Most colleges offer double majors and/or major/minors. You can major in anything as long as you get your pre-med courses in before heading to med school. You don’t have to major in bio. You could major in CS and take the additional courses.

I agree with Erin’s Dad. It’s likely that you could major in cs and take the pre med track (basically required courses), if that is what interests you. A lot of colleges actually encourage majoring in something besides biology if you are pursuing pre med, because it can sometimes give you an edge later on. For example, I know a lot of music majors who are on the pre-med track. Most schools are pretty flexible with majors/minors, so it’s likely that you could make something to fit your interests. If cs is something that you really want to take in high school, I would suggest taking it, since you still have a lot of time to be considering your future career.

And then there is Computational Biology or Bioinformatics. Many options to consider. Do some research…

What about if I’m in a BS/MD type of program? Is it still possible to double major/minor in another subject if I’m in a program similar to that?

Bump…
