So I am most likely going to Fordham University enrolled in the Gabelli School of business planning to major in Marketing with a concentration in Communications and Media Management. I also want to do a minor in Journalism.
I am a little worried that this is not the correct major for the career path I want. I’m really interest in the news/reporting/television world and would love to work for NBC or another major news network after graduation in some capacity. I have always loved writing, but thought business would be a safer route.
Can I achieve a career like this with a marketing degree? If marketing doesn’t work out, I think I will switch to political science and communications.
You can always start off by taking some business classes and see if it is a path you like. If not, you can switch down the road. At Fordham just be careful of the core curriculum for the b-school as opposed to the liberal arts school – you can check online but I believe the b-school doesn’t require a foreign language while the liberal arts school does so you may want to consider continuing with your foreign language (or at least keeping any different requirements in mind) in case you want to make the switch down the road. FWIW my S went to Fordham - Gabelli and loved it.
I don’t think anyone here would be qualified to answer if you could go into reporting with a marketing degree. However there are opportunities on campus at Fordham (ex. it has a great radio station) to get involved in the communications arena.
