So I am most likely going to Fordham University enrolled in the Gabelli School of business planning to major in Marketing with a concentration in Communications and Media Management. I also want to do a minor in Journalism.
I am a little worried that this is not the correct major for the career path I want. I’m really interest in the news/reporting/television world and would love to work for NBC or another major news network after graduation in some capacity. I have always loved writing, but thought business would be a safer route.
Can I achieve a career like this with a marketing degree? If marketing doesn’t work out, I think I will switch to political science and communications.
Any advice would be awesome! Thanks
So I would recommend just going ahead and majoring in journalism since that’s what you really want to pursue. Then you can go ahead and minor in marketing or even political science could be a good idea.
@angelkitty I’m just worried bc journalism is extremely competitive and struggling field. Can marketing translate to writing/production jobs along with lucrative business careers? I’m just worried I wont find a job after graduation
The only problem is that you might not get a job in the journalism field without the major. Because there are a lot of laws you have to learn to be a journalist. Now you could go into a Communication major if you are concerned about getting a job then minor in journalism. Those fields are more similar. Plus Comm has many career options, including business. The only problem I see with majoring in Marketing is you won’t be taking classes that are relevant to what you specifically want to do.
What about double majoring in marketing and journalism?
What subject matter would you want to cover in a journalism career? Business? Politics? No preference?
