I'm about to become a sophomore. I attended an out of state catholic 4 year liberal arts college in Maine. I was in pre-pharmacy and I did really bad the first year. I ended up with a 1.1 gpa HORRIBLE I KNOW. I'm starting to realize that pharmacy isn't my cup of tea. I want to change my major and transfer to a different school because I hate it there. Plus their science department was mediocre. But since my GPA is so low my only option is to stay at the same school or go to the community college nearby in the state I live in which is Massachusetts to pull my GPA up. I want to transfer to either Umass Amherst or California State University Fullerton/Sacramento. I don't wanna go to a top school just a good in state university that I listed.

So, what I'm asking, are my chances to transfer greater if I stay at the college I'm at right now or go to the community college (Bunker Hill) near by to save money?

Also, with a 1.1 GPA can I pull up my gpa to at least a 2.0-2.5+ by 1 semester or would it have to be one full year?

I was in the same position but a psychology major at UC Santa Cruz! I’m going to a community college simply because I’ll save money and have a job and not hate where I’m at. It in my opinion would be smarter to go to a CC. My counsler at UCSC told me that it’s easier to get into schools from a CC then a 4 year because if you’re at a 4 year university you’re already at a university whereas at a CC you have no where to go/can’t earn a BA/BS if that makes sense!

I’m from Sacramento and Sac State is a good school! D1 sports and a great community vibe. I know their kinesiology program is good but I haven’t heard anything about pharmacy! I know they aren’t doing a spring 2013 admissions and I have also heard Sac and Chico state aren’t doing fall 2013 admissions because of state budget cuts from my lower classman friends who are seniors this year but I would call and ask!

Hope that helped and good luck!

You would likely need a 3.5+ to get into Fullerton or Sac State as an OOS student. For Fullerton, maybe even higher, a 3.7+. The CSUs admissions are driven by GPA and done in preference groups… first local in-state, then state-wide in-state, and lastly OOS. Once a major fills up they stop. But the apps aren’t that expensive so why not give it a try if you are at least above a 3.0.

If you have 30 units already at about a 1.0 GPA and then finish an additional 30 units with a 4.0 your cumulative GPA would be a 2.5. So you’d need at least a year to get to that 2.5.

Thanks for the reply guys I really appreciate it! and I’ll try to get that 4.0 x-x

and my family might move to California. That’s why I’m considering California state schools by the way.

Even if you move to California, your application will be considered OOS. The state colleges look to where you completed the majority of your credits to determine your transfer status. If you have 60 OOS earned credits you’d have to earn another 60 more in-state at a CCC to be considered an in-state transfer student.
