Good community college GPA, bad university gpa. Suggestions :\

So I took almost a quarter of community college credits, and had around a 3.8, my first quarter of college at Cal poly SLO was not too good, mainly because I failed a precalc class, which I am retaking this quarter, and expecting a B or C. CP has grade forgiveness, so the F will be on my transcript, but not accounted towards my GPA, only my new grade.

Right now my Cal poly gpa is 2.4 but my higher education gpa is a 3.4 due to community college grades. My grades this quarter are sort of mediocre. Probably going to get all Bs and Cs, maybe 1 A- taking 4 courses total this quarter.

I am working part time and participate in some clubs and am a business admin and econ double major. i really want to transfer out of cal poly, the school just isn't right for me. I'd prefer a semester school but quarter system is alright too, I just really want to get outta here. I am a first year, sophomore and would like suggestions to schools to transfer to! Also, will my low gpa be a big deal compared to my community college gpa regarding admissions? I sorta assume it will be but if theres anyone that has had a similar experience or in the same situation i would really like to hear from you.

Any suggestions are appreciated, location doesn't matter, I just don't know if i have a chance because i screwed up. I am from Washington state, so im an OOS student now. Would prefer a college with a good econ/biz program if EVEN possible/

So, let’s say your cumulative GPA by the end of this quarter will be a 3.3 give or take a point up or down. You seem to state you have sophomore standing, so you would likely be a junior-level transfer or close to that by the time you send out applications next fall?

A few thoughts

1) Cal Poly is a good school. You may want to give it more of an effort - both socially and academically. A 3.3 is a very good GPA to graduate and go out into the world. (It is only a so-so transfer GPA.) Unless you identify and handle why you are unhappy at SLO it may follow you to your next school. All I am suggesting is that transferring might be a little bit of magical-fixing thoughts when in reality, you can make a great college experience for yourself right where you are at already.

2) Why are you getting B’s and C’s when your goal is to transfer? If the classes are too hard at SLO to get good grades, why would it be any easier at an even better school? You need to show the the transfer schools that you are serious about your academics.

3) This is a tough climate for transfer students… as an OOS student in California, you are likely at the bottom of the priority list. What might be your Wash-State options?

4) If you are set on trying to transfer the plan of action I’d suggest would be to

a) get your GPA up
b) target 4 - 6 schools of which at least 2 are safeties, 2 are matches, and 2 are reaches. Or something like that… you will likely need to blow the money on as many apps as possible (minimum 6, though, I think) and see what comes through… it is just too hard to predict right now with the college-budget-crunch
c) get fired up about SLO… it is your current match because you are there! Live the experience… lots of kids would love to get into SLO this year and will be turned away.
d) think outside the box - maybe you need to take time off, etc

Again, a 3.3 is a good GPA for staying at your current place. It is so-so for transferring to competitive schools but good enough for a lot of middle-of-the road schools. Look for a fit moreso than prestige and you will probably find several schools that will be a match for your GPA.

Thanks for the response, annikasorrensen, I will be a junior level standing around next fall/winter, but at CP since I am double majoring, I will still be staying the 4 years.

I am thinking Seattle U as an option for instate, and looked at some liberal arts schools with good econ programs, possibly some UCs if my grades improve. I am definitely waiting though until next school year, and if my grades improve I will most likely attempt to transfer out as a junior. If I keep this same track of Cs I will most likely stay here, since SLO is a good school… maybe I’m just adjusting too slowly.

Thanks so much, again, I really just need some direction and kind of feel a bit lost at the moment and you’re pretty much on point about everything.

If you are from WA, why didn’t you want to attend UW? It seems like a great school for your major!

That being said, you could always apply to your next school and just send your transcripts from community college… but you will not be able to keep any of your credits from Cal Poly… so you will have to weigh your options and see if it is worth it. Also, you can quote your cumulative GPA as a weighted average of you CC and Cal Poly GPAs when applying to other schools.
