Help me! But be completely honest..

I'm a rising high school senior and will be applying to schools in the fall. I really need advice on what schools I should target.
Here are the stats:

ACT: 34
Uw: ~3.3
W: ~3.7
no class rank, but maybe top 15%

Very rigorous course load-- will have completed 14 AP classes and numerous honors courses by graduation. (passed all AP tests with mostly 4s and 5s)

ECs:
Science Olympiad (11,12)-- medaled at regional and state level in multiple events.
Research at biomedical research lab for the summer.. Will try for intel and Siemens

Honors:
National Achievement Semi, AP scholar with distinction, Spanish honorary (9,10,12)

Volunteering:
Hospital (250 hours)

State: No. VA
ethnicity: African-American
Gender: male

Recs and essays should be superb.

Thanks for reading!

Virginia Tech
VCU
UVA- Reach
William and Mary - Reach
James Madison

UAB- ~15k Scholarship (you seem to like med)
Howard - ~Almost full ride
Minnesota
Ohio St
Wisconsin

U of Miami - Reach
Lehigh - Reach

Thanks barrk

What do you want to study?

What size do you think you’d like?

What state are you in?

What are your financials?

Urban/rural?

HBCU/PWI?

Hmm, I haven’t decided what I want to major in, but I’m interested in biomedical engineering. The size of the school doesn’t matter. I live in northern Virginia. And I don’t qualify for FA.

How much can you afford?

Wow, totally forgot to include my SAT subjects…
Math2: 790 Chem: 780 Lit: 740

Finances shouldn’t be a problem, barrk

Michigan-Reach
University of Washington
Case Western-Reach
UCSD
Georgia Tech-Reach

^ all have great biomed engineering programs

Do you think Hopkins would be too much of a stretch?

You can try for it but your chances aren’t very good. ([Judging from your ACT/you being from north VA/being top 15%]; you went to a really tough HS so you might have a chance)

Thank you!

actually if national achievement scholar its a full ride at UAB!!

UAB is a destination for academically talented students, and we love to reward your hard work. We recognize National Merit Finalists, National Achievement Finalists, and National Hispanic Scholars with the following scholarship, which is renewable for four years. The details:

Full tuition, required fees, and housing (up to 15 credit hours per semester) for a total of eight semesters (fall and spring)
A one-time $2,500 stipend to be used for experiential learning (Study Away, internships, co-ops, etc.)
Students receiving UAB merit-based scholarships are required to live on campus for their first year of enrollment. (Which is a very good place to live. Check out our swank, conveniently located residence halls.) For more information, review the Freshman Scholarship Residency Policy.

Once you’ve been admitted to UAB, simply do the following to claim your scholarship:
National Merit Finalists: Name UAB your first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation; the paperwork for this should be included with your finalist letter. They’ll then send us your name, and we will award your scholarship. Yes, it’s really that easy.

National Achievement Finalists and National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars: Fax or mail us a copy of your Finalist letter and/or your Finalist certificate, and we’ll award your scholarship:

sci/tech honors would be wonderful for you!..undergrad research can start in 1st semester.

urban campus 11K undergrads, very diverse campus…26% AA

6% greek, not a football school…very very strong for sciences… home of top 10-30 med school. 7 hospitals surround the campus

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Alabama_at_Birmingham

Thanks parent56!

feel free to pm me with any questions. S2 attends there…chemistry and molecular biology… sci/tech and chem scholar.

Sure, will do!

Pre-med or not? If pre-med, be aware that medical school is expensive, so consult with your family about whether the money available for undergraduate would be available for medical school if you went to a low cost / big merit scholarship school (UA Birmingham, UA Huntsville, Howard, etc.) for undergraduate.

Other schools, not mentioned previously, include North Carolina State (has biomedical engineering) and UA Huntsville (full ride for 3.0 GPA and 34 ACT, has chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering, but not biomedical engineering).

I like small schools. Some that seem like they might fit

TCNJ

You’ve got some great stats. Ask at the Biomedical research lab where they suggest. Chances are they’ll write you a recommendation letter.

Besides being good options, you have a great chance of merit aid at either Case Western or U of Rochester. With merit aid you could save school $$ toward a house (or other) when you graduate. Also consider WUSTL (I THINK they have BME, but check. I don’t have a lot of time to check this morning.) They also have good research options in general and some very competitive merit aid opportunities.

^Yes WUSTL has BME. Might also consider for OP UMD college park, UVA (maybe reach), or Georgia Tech if it wasn’t mentioned yet.
