Hey everyone! I'm having a near impossible time choosing where I'll be going to school next fall and would appreciate some input. I'll be majoring in Mechanical Engineering and regardless of which school I go to, I won't have to graduate with debt. Given those prerequisites, let me know which option you would choose and why:

University of Texas at Austin: (thinking I may get a few grand in departmental scholarships)
Texas A&M University: (due to national merit program will be about full tuition scholarship)
Baylor University: (full tuition guaranteed, possibly a full ride)
Oklahoma University: (full ride+)
Georgia Tech University: ($10,000 a year minimum scholarship, but out of state tuition due to Texas residence)

What feedback can anyone give on the mechanical engineering programs at these schools and the college environment overall? What would your choice be?

Thanks!

How do you know that GT will give you $10k? They’re stingy with awards…many top students get nothing.

If you’re a NMF, then Alabama would give you:

5 years of tuition (can use a semester $12,500 towards a summer abroad! awesome! Can also be used for grad school)
1 year of housing
$3500 per year
$2500 per year from Eng’g (so that’s $6000 per year stipend!!)
$2000 summer abroad
iPad

And, only a 3.0 GPA is needed to keep the award.

UT may not give you anything…they’ve cut back heavily on merit awards
TAMU has a high GPA requirement to keep their awards…That can be scary for an eng’g major

Sounds like you live in Texas. I think Rice has a good engineering program. I would recommend some of the UC schools, but their app submission period ended yesterday…

Just chose the school you like the most and dont worry about the money so much

A lot of it depends on what you’re looking for in a university.
I personally don’t like the size of UT and TAMU, their campus’s also give me a sick feeling, but that’s just me personally.

I perfer Baylor above the rest however (as a summer program student and the sibling of a current student), I feel like Baylor provides a family feeling and has just the right amount of people so you’re able to really interact with students and faculty on a deeper level than just what the basic classroom includes.
I would also highly recommend it because, as a Christian university, love and foward thinking is definately promoted.

It comes down to what makes you happy and which school will help mold you into the person you hope to grow up to become.

If all else fails, check out Baylor’s football team!

Thanks for the replies everyone! As far as the first post, I have been guaranteed by a Georgia Tech alumni a $10,000 yearly scholarship if I go to Georgia Tech. As far as the third post, I mainly listed the scholarships so that everyone would have an idea what would be on the table if they had to make the decision. I also won’t be applying to any more school so I would really appreciate more opinions on which school stands out to you from the ones I’m looking at! Thanks so much!
