I need advice about choosing a major. I enjoy reading and writing. Maybe I could be a reading specialist. But im really unsure about taking an English degree. Psychology I’m interested in. Maybe I could be an art therapist. Could anyone tell me the pros and cons of these degrees? What to expect in these classes?
Perhaps you could choose a double major or pick one as,the major and the other as a minor with lots of classes. I s
In the minor. Both therapists or specialists will require graduate work. Proficiency in reading or writing is wonderful, but to be a reading specialist, you need to understand how reading develops, diagnosing specific problems or disabilities with reading, how remediate reading problems, assistive technology and lots more. You may want to try tutoring children in reading to find out more about it. A bachelor’s degree n psychology is unlikely to result in a therapy positions without more training… You might find out what training you need to become an therapist.
Look at music therapy as a model of therapeutic roles that dont involve counseling. I thought that professional was so interesting and enticing, but was no go for me because of my limits playing kazoos and triangles or clap time. One thing that is nifty about art, music, recreational therapy and so on is the opportunity to work with people of all ages.
I am happy that you find satisfaction reading and art, but your success in these areas doesn’t lead directly into a degree or profession. If asked why you selected reading or art therapy as a professional. I know there are good programs that you should look at and consider how each matches your skills and interests. Your question is what do I want to be and how do I get there. So, start poking around cuz something is out there for you.
Thank you so much. This is good information. I will think about this more.
