Help me choose: Emory vs UMD for Public Health/Human Health

I am still waiting on three other decisions but I want to try to make my decisions based off of what I have right now. I am planning on going to medical school after undergrad. I also would love to go out of state and explore a new city but I’m just paranoid about costs. At this point, I didn’t get any scholarships that were super significant so debt is inevitable no matter where I go. My parents also haven’t really deterred me from anywhere but again I just feel bad about costs still.

I am in state at UMD, didn’t receive any scholarships. It comes in at $27,856 with loans.

I didn’t receive any scholarships at Emory either. It’s coming in at $39,440 with loans and work study.

I want to appeal my financial aid at Emory but I guess I can’t because my situation hasn’t changed and they don’t care about outside scholarships at other schools (I was a semifinalist for the Robertson at Duke and I wanted to use that for leverage.)

Please help and also feel free to give any advice about anything else. I can also provide additional information if needed.

I imagine Emory is better - but you’re going to med school - Maryland will have the rigor and it’s less. Maryland is a fine school. You shouldn’t be taking loans.

If you are a semi-finalist at Duke, I might suggest you look at Arizona - you’ll get a whale of a scholarship - your COA might be like 20K - without loans. Maybe that’s similar. You have a couple weeks to apply - easy app.

It will come down to rigor and test scores (MCAT) for medical school.

Good luck - I think you can’t go wrong but I believe Emory is your best bet. But typically cheap = best.

Emory is better because of it’s proximity to CDC. When D18 was looking into colleges, I remember that Emory’s students were involved in many projects with the CDC. Since your interest is in public health, having an opportunity to work with the CDC would be invaluable.
