UNC Chapel Hill vs. UMich vs. Emory

Hi all,
These three are my top choices. With a scholarship at Emory, the total cost is the same for UNC and Emory. UMich is about 9K higher but has given me Honors program, which I didn’t get with the other two. I am OOS all three. Weather I know is worse in MI. Distance to home is not a factor. I am planning to major in Biology/Neuroscience as premed.
I am having a hard time choosing between the three. All three are really good programs, but I don’t have all the details to compare between them. I heard from a friend in Mich that Honors is fantastic and to seriously consider it. I don’t have any contacts at Emory or UNC and want to understand better differences in program, premed support, housing and campus life as a comparison. Anything you can share on these factors will really help me.
Thanks in advance.

I’d forget Mich if it’s that much more expensive. So between the other two, the obvious relevant differences would be 1. the whole sports/rah rah thing which is everywhere at UNC and nowhere at Emory, and 2. The proximity to a major metropolitan area. Both have lots of medical research, great academics, etc.

UNC will give you serious academics and research opportunities. It is very strong in the sciences and has excellent advising. It will also give you school spirit and a very intense feeling of community. It’s a very energetic campus with a lot going on.

Emory and Michigan are obviously outstanding schools. You can’t go wrong with these choices and it will basically come down to differences that are important to you.

Since Emory has it’s own medical school and is next door to the CDC, shadowing and internships will likely be easier there.
All three are good choices, but if med school is in your future, remove U Mich from the list based on higher costs.

UNC also has its own medical school and I thought Michigan did as well. The CDC is a definite plus and you can ask about the ease of shadowing and internships. Internships and research positions at UNC are plentiful. As I mentioned all three choices are outstanding- congrats.

Thank you all for your input. Still debating but leaning more towards MI now because of the honors program they have offered. The college vibe is important too. All 3 schools have excellent medical school. I am hearing that research and volunteering is easily possible at MI too. There are no negatives among the three. I also like the diversity at Emory and MI more and the fact that there are more OOS. Thanks again.

UNC has an excellent health/medicine and biomedical research infrastructure, so I wouldn’t worry about that. You can get that at both Emory and UNC, and Michigan as well.

Is Michigan $9K more per year or just total? I don’t really see a reason to pay $40K more overall to go to Michigan when you’ve got two excellent and less expensive options. What does the honors program offer that it makes you weight it so heavily against two equally excellent and cheaper universities?

Emory’s going to be a smaller environment - fewer undergrads. It’s also located in a major metropolitan area, whereas UNC and Michigan are both in college towns (well known, well-reputed college towns - but college towns nonetheless).

What’s wrong with college towns juillet? What’s so special about about Emory’s location in “a major metropolitan area”
For an 18 year old entering university life, college town’s are IMHO the perfect location.

I don’t think that amount is a large enough difference to automatically dismiss Michigan. pbharat should really concentrate on fit.
