Help me choose

How do you decide between an internship? I have 4 offers, in the field of Software Engineering.

MathWorks

Merrill Lynch

Blackstone

Pinterest

I ideally want to stay in NY, so I've scratched Pinterest from the list. However, my two competitors are Mathworks and Merrill Lynch.

Mathworks - An Engineering company, full of smart folks, however, located in MA, and I am not trying to leave NY.

Merrill Lynch - Located in Manhattan, offering twice the intern hourly rate, but obviously I don't expect people of the calibre of Mathworks.

Would you go with Mathworks or Merrill Lynch? I will be part of dev team on both groups. I just can't help but realize that Merrill Lynch is in NY(+), and offering twice the hourly rate(+). Which would look better on your resume? I plan on joining either team full time once I graduate, since they have both told me our internship is the pipeline for full time employment.

Help!

Merrill Lynch. No question about it. The pay is friggin awesome and it really doesnt depend on the prestige company. Itll all boil down to what you can do.

*Company prestige

Based off not wanting to leave NY and the pay for Merrill Lynch, I would go with that one.

Mathworks. Good stuff.

I’ve spent the last 7-8 months teaching myself MATLAB. I have been blown away by program and can only imagine the caliber of people that put it together.

I’ve turned down internships with higher pay (never double though), I’d pick the industry I want to work in. If you plan on joining the team after graduating, it really shouldn’t matter how well it looks on your resume.

Guys,

Remember that Merril Lynch offered me twice and a half of Mathworks, and it is located in the vibrant NYC. I know MathWorks probably has more intelligent people, and I absolutely hate the Boston area(I’m from NYC), but part of me wants to see what others have to say.

What do you guys think? I will be part of the Engineering team for both Mathworks, and Merril Lynch(BOA).

I’d go with ML. While the money you earn as an intern shouldn’t factor much into your decision (assuming you’re not struggling to get by), it’s likely an indicator of salaries of full time employees. Liking your surrounding environment should definitely be a factor in your choice of jobs. After all, you’re not working 24/7.

If you find out you don’t like the company you intern with, it’s still not a big deal. Just find a different company upon graduation. You’re not mapping out the next 40 years of your career with this one decision.

Will this be am internship during the summer of your freshman or sophomore years or are you a junior? In other words, is this the last opportunity for an internship before you interview for a full time job? I wouldn’t worry about the internship pay because the companies could have completely different philosophies about compensation for temporary employees. The question is whether you want to work in a banking/investment counseling environment. If so, the go with ML. If MathWorks is more interesting then go there and try to find similar work for your full time position. Of course, there’s always the possibility that you will change your mind about Boston.

I am a senior, and this would be my last shot at an internship. Chris, even at Merrill Lynch, I will be a ‘Technology Analyst intern’. It’s a euphemism for a Software Engineer I suppose.

Help me decide folks, this is bothering me!

Haven’t you answered the question yourself? You are unwilling to leave NYC, even for a summer, so there is no choice.
