Help me compare VA. schools - UVA, W&M and UR

SHE GOT ACCEPTED!! I can’t believe it! A letter said financial aid was not yet determined so I called & they are still working on it as they sent me more forms last week. I got it to them right away but I guess it takes time, will be hopeful but that will be a deciding factor, hate to wait but at least she feels better knowing she got in!!! THank you all so much for your support!!!

Congratulations to your daughter! I hope the finances work out for you. Richmond says they meet full need, so hopefully all you have to do is find a way to meet what they they think you can give.

Congratulations on UR! My DD is a sophomore Spider and is very happy there!

Yay!!! Great news:)))

Congratulations! She will be in Virginia after all for college! And since Richmond meets full need and William & Mary doesn’t (for OOS students), UR should be a better fit for your family financially than William & Mary probably would have been. She now needs to look forward, not back. . Glad it seems to be working out (the financial part sounds like it will now that they have all your info). . Go Spiders!

Great school! So happy for your D – celebrate! Fingers crossed the financial aid works for you.

So so happy for you and C. This is great news!!

Great school! Very happy for you and your daughter!

Congrats to your D. Beautiful school!

@cloudysmom Congrats to your D, and you too, mom:) UR has so many wonderful opportunities for students. My older D who graduated last year is currently doing interviews for PhD programs and was so well prepared by UR. My middle D is still there and is thriving, too.

Be sure to tell your D to check out the Sophomore Scholarship in Residence program. Students take a year long class as a group, including a travel abroad experience, work on group projects together, and live together in a common area of a dorm. Costs are included in regular tuition, and it is a great experience.

I am keeping fingers crossed that UR comes through with a workable financial aid package for your D. I am guessing that it will much better than anything W&M could offer an OOS student.

Congrats! She will love Richmond.

@Wilson98 @sevmom Thank you!!! I agree, W&M would not nearly have been able to offer her enough, jury still out on our offer but I imagine it will be better than W&M, no matter what it is. This is a much better school for her in many ways and we are just crossing our fingers the aid will come thru. She is thrilled to be in VA after all, yes! We are looking forward, not back, now that we have something tangible and exciting to focus on!

@phoenixmomof2 @mamag2855 Thank you both - maybe we’ll meet one of these days! She saw the Sophomore Scholars program & looks great, perfect for her! mamag, thanks for keeping fingers crossed - it all depends on aid! She is just happy to get accepted, she really needed that boost!

@citymama9 @yauponredux @kkmabo @Twicer @wisteria100 @londondad Thank you all so much!! She is over the moon & hoping my ex didn’t mess up the aid too much!

Congratulations on the U of Richmond acceptance! It’s a first-rate school with nice academic balance (pre-pro vs. intellectual) and the campus looks beautiful from what I can tell. Since it’s a LAC, the vast majority of her classes will be small throughout her (hopefully) four years, so if she wants to interact with professors directly, she should be able to.

Richmond is 1A in basketball and the football program has been pretty good recently… so it’s a good school for sports fans, especially considering its LAC status. (not too many elite LACs have D1 sports…)

@prezbucky Thank you, she is so excited!! The info they sent says faculty is 8:1 ratio and small classes which is really what she needs. Am really hoping she can interact w/ her professors, that would mean a lot to her. Thanks for your support!

So happy for both of you. You will love Richmond. My D2 liked UR so much more than W&M so hopefully yours will too. Maybe we can meet some time. I’m also from MA.

@LMHLAW3 Thank you! Would love to meet some time!! You’re from MA? Small world! & thanks for all your help & advice these past few months! Interesting to hear your D liked UR more than W& M, what would she say the main difference is? I think UR seems such a better fit for my D, interesting 1 denied her & 1 accepted her…

So happy for you and especially your daughter - ED2 was a good strategy after all!

@Spring16 Thank you! Yes, glad we went the ED2 route, not sure she would have made it but now just waiting on the FA from UR, trying not to get too excited till then…

Just curious, @cloudysmom, what made UR more desirable to your daughter than Wake Forest for ED 2?
We are looking at similar schools for next year’s admission cycle.

@dragonmom3 Sure, happy to help but our reasoning will be different as we are in SC & D wanted to go further away than just NC. Mainly, UR is a smaller school, 8:1 ratio, I kept reading that you can really get to know your professors, no TA’s (but WF might be the same). WF seems preppier, more southern from what I read, more Greek. UR had 100% demonstrated need, it was right outside Richmond, which is a great city. WF is sorta in the middle of no where. D loves D.C., we have family & friends there so she wanted to be able to visit. 30 mins from Colonial Williamsburg. Let’s see…each student gets $4k for summer internships or research, great study abroad (but WF is great for that too). WF was actually my 2nd choice for her after UR, it’s a great school but size, location, southern feel, being by a larger city, relationships w/ teachers…all won out.
