So I'm transferring from a CSU to a UC. I'm from SJSU and I'm a Biological Sciences major.

Sadly, I didn't get into UCSD, which is my number one choice. I know UCSD is THE best for biosci. However, I did get accepted to UCLA, UCD, UCI, and UCSB. I didn't apply to UCR and UCSC, and I got rejected to UCB as well. (To those of you who are thinking of transferring from a CSU to a UC: let me tell you--it IS possible.)

So I'm contemplating between UCLA and UCD. I hear that UCD has a great bio dept. But UCLA is considered a more prestigious school. My sister looked up the biosci grad rankings and found that UCLA is ranked #20, while UCD is ranked #24. As you can see, 20 and 24 is not a very big gap. My SIR deadline is 6/1, which is in a couple of days! I can't decide between UCLA or UCD. I hear UCLA is very competitive and I'm afraid I won't be able to have a superb GPA or graduate with honors. But if I go with UCD, I feel like I am giving up my once in a lifetime offer to UCLA. Honestly, I don't care about the campus life, the social life, or the atmosphere. I'm only going to study. So I only want to take into account which school is better for my future and will get me into a better medical school.

What do you think?

*Also posted in University of California - GENERAL section.

Whatever thou doest, do it quickly......UCLA's June 1st deadline is fast approaching. (Assuming this applies to your situation, of course) The Housing, Honors and Fall 2004 transcripts are due on the 1st.

Good luck deciding....

Oh, the dreaded deadline... I feel so behind because I can't decide on which school to attend. Luckily, I already sent in my Fall 2004 transcripts to UCLA. I haven't done my Housing yet. Have you done it all?

I can only speak for myself and say yes....back in April. Late April and I think that most on CC have also completed the forms. Can't speak for them, but it's been discussed briefly.

Housing and Honors is the only thing I'd be worried about at this point. However, most of us have alreaddy signed up for Orientation, which is another biggie.

Wow. Back in April? That was days ago. I didn't get acceptances until really late because I hear CSUs get last priority. I got into UCLA on May 17 to be exact. Most my acceptances were in mid-May. So I haven't had much time to decide on where I wanted to go.

Thanks for letting me know about the Orientation. Ugh, I haven't done that either... BOO..

No brainer...UCLA over UCD anyday.

But yes UCLA is very competitive...you will have to work much harder there than UCD...

As far as the June1st deadline for transcript and scores concerned...i still haven't send my AP scores to UCLA...i dont they they will revoke ur admission for that...i mean several of us will make our decision in the last minute...but itz always good to send it...just in case...i guess illl have to call up collegeboard 2morrow...but make sure u send in ur SIR on time...

Thanks for your input!

Not a problem. For what it's worth, go to UCLA! lol

UNPREDICTABLE,

First and foremost congratulations on being admitted to those great universities. Considering the situation you are in and in my personal opinion, UCLA hands down. Also, UCLA is as you said competitive but that is because it is UCLA. I know many say UCLA is overrated, which is true in some ways. I believe the benefits coming out of UCLA will surpass that of UCD. I have friends that go there currently and just love the UCLA education that they are receiving. They are in the bio programs and they tell me that they have met brilliant professors and great research teams over there. I know my reasons are not so valid, because this is based on personal opinion and word-of-mouth. But I would pick UCLA. I hoped I helped.

Btw, if you do not mind, could you provide us your stats? GPA...major prep classes...etc. I have friends from CSUs and I am sure they wouldn't mind to transfer into a UC. Maybe I can give them hope with your situation and success story!

If you could provide your stats, that would be great. Take care and good luck to you on your decision.

I'm not premed, but from what I've heard your GPA is the single most important thing when applying to med schools and what school you're coming from doesn't make a big difference. Both are good schools and both have hospitals and med schools, so IMO it mostly comes down to which school will give you a better GPA and which you'll enjoy living at for the next 2 or 3 years. Since you said that you don't care about the social scene or atmosphere, I'm going to have to give the nod to Davis.
But that's JMO, and like I said, I'm not premed.

applemouth,

Thanks for your input! I will take them into consideration.

As for how I got in.. I was actually surprised that I got in to these schools. I never finished my major lower division courses that I should be finished with. So I wasn't expecting to get accepted anywhere. Although I'm a Bio Sci major, I didn't settle on this major until my second year of college. So I only got to take classes for my major during Fall 2004 and Spring 2005. These classes included Bio 1 and 2 from a 3-series Bio, Chem 1 and 2 from a 2-series Chem, Calc 1 and 2 from a 3-series Calc, and Physics 1 from a 2-series Physics. I didn't take any OChem classes yet, but I will start the first one (2 part series) this summer. My overall GPA after Fall 2004 was a little above 3.7 (if I count the summer courses I took at a local CC last summer). However, my major GPA was 3.85. Oh and my best piece of advice is: Don't talk with advisors. They don't know what they are doing. I had to do everything on my own. I looked up the curriculum by checking the schools I wanted. I also checked the equivalents by checking my CSU courses with a local CC and then checking the courses at the local CC with the UC I wanted.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you want to know anything else.

I agree with UNPREDICTABLE counselors can and will get you in the wrong direction they really don't know much except making you aware of assist.org which is a no brainer. My counselors actually discouraged me from applyiing to the UC's saying it was too competitive and would be a waste of money (obviously that was not the case seeing how I got into both CAL and ucla) if you feel you have a decent gpa screw everyone elese and apply because if you dont then you'll be missing out.

i agree with mexbruin and unpredictable. i did not consult a counselor because they are unnecessary and can't give you any more information than you can find out yourself. i just planned all the classes from day 1 and made sure i finished every requirement needed to transfer. The only time i actually talked to a counselor was when i notified UCR that i was leaving.

and Unpredictable, choose UCLA

UNPREDICTABLE,

Thank you and I appreciate you supplying us with your impressive stats. I will definitely let you know if I have anymore questions. Thanks again and congratulations to you once more. You'll make the right decision in the end. Good luck again.
