Hey everyone,
I was just admitted off of the Rice waitlist and am really excited, but the problem is I've never visited. I am also worried about being overwhelmed by the workload, especially since I'm unsure of a major but would like to try math.
My parents are really encouraging me to go to a school I've been to, especially University of Rochester because I got a good amount of merit aid there and it's a good school that I liked pretty well on a visit. Other choices include USC but I didn't get any aid there so it's pretty much out. They're also concerned about grad school admissions, though I may decide against going. We're from AZ but I have been to the Houston area (just not Rice) and I've visited Rochester.
Any advice is appreciated!

Rice is known for the happiest students.

Rice is an incredible university. If you go and absolutely hate it there, you can always transfer. Getting in is an accomplishment in itself, going would be incredible. If you got accepted, you’re ready for the workload.

I agree that Rice is an amazing school and a great place to be. However, Rice would not be the perfect place for everybody. Every school is different and has its own feel. That being said, I honestly do not think it is the best idea to enroll into a school you have never visited, especially if there is another university you already like and have a good scholarship to. Would you really want to risk hating it there if you already have other, safer options?

Did you already commit to University of Rochester? If not, it is too late to go there. Deadline was Wednesday at midnight.

I really like both Rochester and Rice. You might just want to go with the one which costs less. I doubt that the work load at Rice is much heavier than at Rochester. Both are challenging.

The weather in Rochester is much worse during winter. However, the “cluster” approach to academics is super flexible. Yet the social life is probably better at Rice and academics are at least as good as at Rochester. Social life is not bad at Rochester, though. Students at UR are very nice and studious.

USC is not as good as Rice or Rochester. In my opinion, it is too big for a private college.

Take as long to decide as Rice will allow you. Visit immediately if possible. It is an amzing school, and worth serious consideration.
