Hi, I will be attending the University of Arizona fall 2005 as Undecided major.... I really would like to claim a major by this summer... I need some help though in determining my major!
here is what I am good at and like to do:

Best Subjects:
English (my favorite!)
Physics
Chemistry
Art

What I love to do:
Work with computers
Use Photoshop and Paint shop pro to design pictures
Reading
Poetry
Music
Research stuff online
talk on Message Board (LOL)

I say major in English if you are interested in becoming an excellent writer as well as a reader of great lit. Your skills would lend themselves to journalism and related careers-- a couple of science courses would be good background but a Chem or Phys major only makes sense for the scientifically dedicated and obsessed types. College should also be a time to explore fields, interests , and skills that may be new for you and meet people who will inspire you to take off in unexpected directions.

Why the hurry to declare a major? Fresman year is a great opportunity to sample diffferent courses and professors that will only add to an informed choice about a major field of study. Unless Arizona is organized in a way that favors declared versus undeclared majors, it seems pointless to choose before you even get there.

I would say look at your personality and which one might fit the best with that, going beyond the surface things. There are a bunch of tests/books out there that can help with that. Look at all the different majors and whats required, check out the curriculum requirements. Go to the library and read some of the books that you'd have to do or explore anything that has to do with the major. Talk with people who are majoring in subjects you're considering to get a realistic picture of what the major entails. Just remember you're going to be spending a lot of time being involved in the major so be sure its something you like.

Or you could just wait til college and experiment then.

No reason to choose a major today. I chose a major before I went to college (math). Changed it the FIRST day of college after going to my first calculus class.

There are a lot of majors out there that you've never even heard of before college, especially at a big school like UA. My father, who was in the Army for 20 years, tells the story of how he wanted to be an engineer and took classes throughout those 20 years preparing to go to college when he retired. He started college as an engineering major, took a beginning microbiology class to fulfill a science requirement and fell in love with it. Went on to get his BS, MS and PhD in microbiology.

So my advice is to take ADad's advice--take a variety of classes and be open to the possibilities. You may surprise yourself.

Gabbyrenee,
Although I agree with some others that it's not important to narrow your major down initially, I also think that it helps to be looking in that direction. So, the early examination of courses in potential majors (visiting classes, reading their descriptions, looking at the texts, talking to profs & students), can help you with that decision down the line.

Keep in mind that what you major in does not determine (or limit) your career.

And as to careers, btw, the fact that you are drawn to chemistry, to art, and to photoshop, and that creativity is something you enjoy (e.g., poetry), it is possible that you will end up in photography as a career, and/or media arts (in which art & computers intersect). Your musical inclinations could aid in the field of media arts.

Your interest in English (with photography) could steer you into photojournalism eventually.

Graphic design (as someone else mentioned) is another possible path: that is not only because you indicate that you like doing that; it is also because you seem to have aptitude in the aesthetic area (art/music) and in detail.

As you begin taking courses (& also begin looking at what the prerequisites & full program requirements are), refinements of your interests & aptitudes will become clearer.

Those who have ability in art and a propensity for computers are in a lucky position if they are just coming of age. The field of cyber-graphics was something not available to graphic designers of previous generations, & the combination of these multiplies one's career possibilities. You will have options in print media and possibly the technical aspects of the film world.
