My sister is a senior this year (yay) and she still hasn't decided which schools she wants to apply to. She knows for sure that she wants to be an Elementary School Teacher. She also wants to attend a school at least an hour but no more than three hours away from home (we live twenty minutes outside Boston) so generally in New England. She is a little afraid of the process of searching for a school that's right for her, so I agreed to do a little research. I've already found a few schools that meet her criteria (I think! I'm only a sophomore lol) and I would love your opinions and suggestions (PLEASE) on which schools she should apply to! Here is a list I put together:

Quinipiac University
Sacred Heart University
URI

*btw my sister is a mostly A- and B+ kind of student with some A+ grades in Spannish and maybe some scattered C's in Chemistry and Math (no more than two). Her SAT's were average, although I don't have an exact number for you. Hope this helps!

She may want to look up the teacher credentialing system in the places where she would like to teach and see how well various schools would prepare her for that.

She isn’t sure where she wants to teach just yet. All she knows is that she wants to work in an Elementary School. I would really appreciate some school suggestions if anyone has a minute!

She should start by asking her favorite elementary school teachers, and the principal at her old elementary school for their recommendations. They will have good suggestions for her.

She also needs to find out how much your family can pay for her studies. She will need at least one solid safety on her list.

My economics teacher mentioned today that where you go to school doesn’t matter in terms of becoming a teacher (of course the education matters, but I mean having a more prestigious degree apparently does nothing to improve your salary), so financially a state school would be a great option. No matter whether financials matter to her or not, it’s great that you are helping her out, but it should really be her doing the research.

Please tell me she is applying to the UMass System (Amherst, Lowell, Salem) for an affordable education. Entry-level teaching jobs in elemntary education don’t pay well, no need to go into debt. Save money for a good grad program…
I agree with the advice to talk to her teachers to see what they recommend.

Also, check the education majors forum:

She doesn’t need to be “an hour or more” away from home. Once you are on campus you are in a different world. And you parents will probably not drive over and follow you around.
I went to college 20 minutes away and I felt like I was on a different planet :-)

Here’s a good search tool and some results for elementary ed. majors in New England and NY:
[College Navigator - Search Results](<a href=“College Navigator - Search Results”>College Navigator - Search Results)

Check out Lesley U., Emmanuel, Simmons, Endicott, - there are lots of choices.

What does her guidance counselor say???

emily…

What are her test scores and GPA?

Also how much will your parents pay each year. THAT answer, along with her stats, will largely determine where she should apply.
