Okay so I’m trying to find colleges that are the best match for me to apply to. Money is a kind of a big deal but I’ll be applying for financial aid and maybe loans.
I’m a Georgia resident, so UGA is something I’m looking at as more of a financially wise/safety school. However, I don’t believe UGA will be the best match for me. For some of the reasons listed below:
wants:
liberal
not that much greek life
large city (NYC, LA…) or BEACH (I enjoy the fast pace)
city with art potentials
away from home
i don’t care for school spirit
not against party schools
IDK JUST I GO TO ART SCHOOL ?? (help me what’s the biggest differences)
needs:
good art program (i was originally wanting to be an illustrator then art director)
good psychology program
My stats:
(testing one more time to maybe get a composite of 31 or super score of 32/33)
ACT: 29 (E
SUPERSCORE: 31 (applying somewhere that superscores would help a bit)
UW GPA: 3.9 (we don’t do ranks or weighted
7 APs all other classes honors (most rigorous curriculum)
EC:
Founder and President of Speech and Debate
Founder and sole creator of School Zine
Varsity Volleyball 4ys (captain)
Varsity Cross Country 4yrs
Varsity Soccer 4 yrs
Key Club
NHS
SNHS
NSHSS
Governor’s Honor Program Finalist
Essays are about my transformation as a vegetarian, LGBT support, and my artistic statement is okay.
Colleges currently looking at:
NYU
UCLA
UM
UGA
UF
maybe:
BU
Barnard
If i get into uga ??? I will get Zell Miller, which pays for most of tuition. This is the struggle because right now I don’t know what other colleges will give me money wise and I don’t want to get my hopes up. I think a big regret or fear for me would be to get into any of these schools and then just not be able to afford them anyways. I need to broaden my search to not school that are just prestigious but institutions where I will thrive and be happy. Thanks !
You will be full pay at schools like UCLA, UM since they are out of state public Us (check UF). Look here:

Erin’s dad-- where in that list is ucla or um ? I’m confused ?
That list is for alternatives where you might get $. I should have finished the sentence.
How much are your parents willing and able to contribute?
erins dad- oh thank you for that list and your help !!
ecmotherx2 - my parents are not willing to spend much but If I can go somewhere prestigious they would be willing to spend more. I’m hoping financial aid will help with a lot.
Are you from a low income family? If so look for schools that offer big financial aid. Unfortunately schools that meet need are highly competitive and a 29 (or 31) ACT may not be enough. That’s one reason I posted that link with assured merit scholarships.
yes I’m on free/reduced lunch at my school and got fee waivers. I’m taking the act again in the Dec and hoping to bring my lowest subscore (math 27) to at least a 30
UGA does have a good art program but it’s huge and the Greek/School Spirited percentage is pretty overwhelming though there was a decent group of the more artistic types. In the past if you were in the honors program you got first choice on dorms and can pick one with more upperclassmen meaning less of the Greek influence as most of those kids move into the houses after Freshman year. Finding schools where you would get aid close to a beach would be easier than NYC or LA. USC gives more aid than UCLA. Cal Poly is in a cute little beach town between LA and San Fran but I don’t think you would get much aid if any. Have you looked at schools like College of Charleston or Coastal Carolina?
You need to work with your parents to run the net price calculator on each college website to see what you would be exoected to pay. Assuming UM is Michigan, they have improved need based aid for OOS students in recent years. But I am not sure they super score, you will have to check. It is likely a reach. None of the UC schools (like UCLA) will be affordable.
dcplanner- I haven’t looked at either of those schools but I will. Ive looked at USC and have thought of applying just to see what I would get. Do you think I could get into the honors program and what is it like ?
intparent- sorry i was referring to michigan. okay I will talk to them about that. do you if, like what dcplanner said, usc would give me more ?
how does usc and ucla compare when it comes to psych and art ?
You do not need to guess and wait to apply to figure out how much aid you will likely get. No one can tell you for sure without knowing a lot more details of your parents’ financial situation. But you can get an answer to the need based question for sure. Each college has a net price calculator on their website financial aid page. Have your parents help plug in income and assets, and it will give you some answers.
