hey i'm an immigrant and my SAT CR section is just TOO low! Can u guys give me some advice on how to get my CR grade up?? In the blue book, or any other SAT prep book, the vocabulary section....i don't know about 75% of them. I'm planning on working my butt off this summer to get my grade up!! Should I go over the entire CR section, circle all the words that I don't know, study the words, and then do the problems??? or how should I study the vocabulary section?????any advice would be appreciated!! I need to get my CR grade up at least 200 points!!!!!

help!!!!!!!!!!!!??

try the sparknotes 1000 word list
and study word roots, suffixes, prefixes, etc.

for passages, just do a bunch of practice tests or a bunch of just the passages in the CR sections...

princetonreview has pretty decent strategies for CR..try that too

readdddddddddd.

agreed. read.

i deduce from your name that you are from either mainland or taiwan. i came from beijing three and a half years ago (jan. of 2004) and i totally understand the frustration from the inability to comprehend the passages on the standardized tests. in my case, reading books (history textbooks, other history books, classic literature, etc.) really helped a lot. i strongly recommend fictions by french/russian authors, whose english usage isnt as esoteric as that by british authors. i espeically liked dumas (three musketeers, count de monte cristo), tolstoy (war and peace), and dostoyevsky (crime and punishment). of course, i didnt understand all of the words when i read them the first time. i think just UNDERSTANDING the main idea/plot is the first step. for other books, i personally LOVE history. i took ap us history and ap euro history this past year and they definitely helped me a lot as well.
history and russian/french novels helped me in: PSAT: 173 (04)-->208 (05)-->220 (06), ACT: 29 (may, 05)-->35 (april, 07)

oh and i forgot... for vocabs, use Word Smart by Princeton Review. for writing section, do a lot of practice tests and ask good teachers and/or friends good at SAT if you dont understand why something's wrong (right).

Yes, whatever you do don't read books by English authors. The english are just too damn well educated.

hey tongchen1226, yeah i'm an immigrant from Taiwan. I've been in the US since April 2004. I have no problem speaking or communicating with people. it's just the SAT kills me. vocabulary is my weak part, and plus I read slow! I skipped pretty much all the vocab section on the SAT, and jumped ahead to the reading passage, but still wasn't able to finish all the passages...but I think i'm gonna give it a try, and read the books u suggested, hopefuly my grade will go up ;) thanks a lot. are u from taiwan too?

Hey, try some speed reading techniques if your reading is extremely slow. If you are, try to not vocalize when you read, it's a bad habit to get into. My biggest suggestion is to read a lot (properly). Also, practice active reading as much as possible. Passive reading isn't really going to help you as much.

study a high-frequency SAT vocab list AND master how to read the passages quickly and answer the questions(so in other words, do as many practice tests as you can)

active reading? whats that?

Active reading is essentially analyzing what you read as you read. It's what everyone should do at all times...

Is it basically annotating? Because I dont know what everyone actually means by actively reading. Analyzing is hard.... does anyone know how you can improve with tone, mood, and main idea...

Thanks

Just practice...
