Help Me Get Out of This Mindset

Hi there. I'm a junior, and I live in the dull state of Connecticut, which I can't wait to get out of for college. But my problem is that I am having trouble seriously considering colleges in other states (those not in very urban areas) because I have my mind set on New York City. I want to make sure I cover all of the bases, though. How can I get myself out of this mindset? Or maybe it's just where I'm meant to be? Thanks.

Force yourself to visit other schools. Maybe you’ll fall in love with another city or area. If not, you know that New York is right for you.

What schools are you considering in NYC?

Is money no object?

If not, then what’s the problem?

One perspective I have heard about schools in the midst of cities is that the students don’t bond as much with each other because some are off doing various things in the city. If you are a museum/theater/music/dance person, maybe the City is essential but otherwise you will find a ton of things to do on most campuses. Try to take advantage of overnights at two contrasting schools if possible (i.e. a city school and a suburban LAC, for example). New York is great but I found a lot to like in Chicago too. Think about Philadelphia. Or Tufts which is just outside of Boston. You’re right that you should try to think more broadly. If you don’t have the stats for Columbia you don’t want to have NYU as the only school on your list.

@Hitch123 - I had heard that too about living in the city. Since the campus is spread out you don’t get the traditional college experience. I don’t have the stats for Columbia, but I am a good student. And NYU isn’t the only school in the city, haha. Plus I don’t think it would offer what I’m looking for - I think I’d enjoy liberal arts schools the most.

@lifekiwi - And if I don’t force myself, I’m sure my dad will, haha.

@mom2collegekids - Money is no object, but I’m just unsure. I don’t want to miss out on other opportunities. And my dad is kind of annoyed that I have such a hard time with it - he wants me to go to UCONN (that will be the day - I can’t wait to get out of this place!). I have lived in suburbs my whole life. What if I don’t like it? I think I will, but some people have doubts. Some colleges I’ve got on my list to research and visit in a week, include: NYU, Fordham, Marymount Manhattan College, Eugene Lang College at the New School (never heard of it, that one might not stay on my list), and my dad says Pace is a good school.

Fordham has two campuses, so check out both (actually, it may have 3 campuses now, not sure.)

Ok…let’s get down to what you want in a school/campus. :)

big
small
quiet
rah rah with big sports to watch
greeks systems an option
traditional-like campus
nice dorms
residential campus where many kids live on campus

What is your likely major and likely career?

What are your stats? GPA and ACT/SAT?

Would other big cities like Boston be ok? What about Washington, DC?

What is it about NYC in particular that you like?

Why does your dad want you to go to UConn? because it’s close???

You say that money is no object, but will your dad complain if the cost is a lot more than in-state UConn? For instance, Fordham would cost more than twice that UConn costs.

There’s other cities ya know :p

and maybe you just hate the northeast? Maybe california might be good

CityGirl; I had to really laugh at your view of Connecticut…because it was my view exactly; when I grew up there! The issue with CT is there is no major interesting city! I do encourage you to look at various types of schools in NY state; Barnard, City College of NY, Hunter College. A little further out; Sarah Lawrence then Vassar.

BTW Long Island also sucks - don’t come out here

^^^

Yeah…

I was thinking like San Francisco or Los Angeles (maybe USF or USD).
