Help me get to college

Osmosis, no, what it took to get into your present school will not help. If anything, it's a disadvantage to have gone to a top school and not have top scores. You are deemed to have had more opportunities than most.

If your heart is set on an ivy or the like, just focus on raising the scores for a real shot.

Hi zagat
well the thing is that maybe I got the low (well they are not that low!!!) scores is the fact that I'm not used to such stuff (speaking about CR), however, do u think that If I write an excellent essay in addition to my EC's and GPA (I will retake the SATs and I hope I'll get a 2100+), there will still be a 10% chance?

What school are we talking about? Harvard would be less than 10%, Dartmouth maybe that and other schools more than that. Isn't the point that you want to find some schools where you have a good chance and will be happy? There are many great schools that are not ivies. There are many that are hungry for international students. What do you really want in a college?

Hi again and thnx alot
well, what i want is Challengeing academic courses, good ECs, good city town, and as you said "colleges hungry for intl's

First, are you working on SATs? A 1300 will open many more doors than the 1200. Not ivy doors, but good school doors. Next I'm concerned, that like a lot of internationals, your realistic schools will not have big enough names to make you comfortable. Are you ready to get past the few names everyone in your present country knows?

I'd look at Vassar, Grinnell, Tulane, Davidson, Holy Cross, Wake Forest, Trinity and Hamilton to name just a few excellent schools that might be in range.

how do people like you get 4.0s? your 4.0 wont seem that great if your SATs are low either.

hey kregz
Having a 4.0 GPA doesnt meen that you should get an automatic 1600/2400 SAT and by the way if you were in my shoes you would definitely know how hard it is to get a good SAT score

A 4.0 means such different things at different schools. There are public schools where 20% have 4.0s! Osmosis, everyone is right, there are tons of good schools that don't have big names. I love Trinity and am applying.

buddy, RETAKE YOUR SAT's! your SATII's are OK for the mid-high colleges, but your SAT I scores are an obsatcle for your. retake the, retake them, retake them.

having a 4.0 and having a crappy SAT is sad.

Kriegz, we all know what you are. You're one of those people who enjoy seeing others suffer (In other words, a sadist).

You say: "having a 4.0 and having a crappy SAT is sad.".
Why? Did it make your day destroying another person's confidence? Why don't you get the heck out of this forum of your intentions are only negative. The rest of us actually want to help those on the forum.

actually i believe the correct word is schadenfreude. It's a german word that means happiness at the misfortune of others. For those of you who have seen Avenue Q, you know what I'm talking about, if not, go to NY and see it.

yea, except that kriegz is also helping make the 'unfortunate' more self conscious about their misfortune.

I loved Avenue Q! I also think those who don't expect real feedback shouldn't ask here. It would be nice if it was honesty without attitude though.

Holy Cross which is 1 hour from Boston doesn't require SAT's although not as diverse as some its academics are better than both BC and BU. Also might look into Trinity College.

You seem to be relatively unfamilar with the American collegiate system. I can't blame you; you certainly know a lot more about it than I know of the Jordanian system. But you seem to only have heard of the best-of-the-best schools. I suggest you look at the Princeton Review's Top 357 (or whatever number it is these days) Colleges book. This will tell you about lots of great schools that you have a good shot at.

I don't think playing up the high-IQ school will do much. The closest thing to an IQ test that colleges look at is the SAT (yes, there are substantial differences, and it's cloaked in inoffensive language, but we should acknowledge that the SAT is basically an intellegence test). You haven't done very well on it. Unless you can get 1300-1400, it's not really much to argue by. Good prep courses are probably hard to come by in Jordan, so maybe look into Internet or phone prep services.

Boston College has pretty strong Jordanian ties. Karim Kawar, the Jordanian ambassador to the US, is a Boston College alum (as is his wife and several members of the royal family). The Jordanian government has donated a rare illuminated Koran to the BC library and helped bring the J.M.W. Turner exhibit to BC's museum a few years back. I bet there are alums there you could get in touch with. According to the BC website, Matt Lane is in charge of applications from Jordan. His email address is listed in the International Applicants section of the BC webpage ( http://www.bc.edu/admission/undergrad/international/ ) and I'm sure he could put you in touch with folks in Jordan. It's probably a good idea to drop him an e-mail and introduce yourself in any case since he'll be reading your application.

Also, I'd be wary of par72's comments since a look into his/her past posts will reveal a systemic attempt to discredit BC.

thnx alot
I will contact BC (since there are good relations maybe they admit all Jordanians(and maybe Jordanian Residents)

C ya

Your preliminary college list is VERY unrealistic. I would have a tough time getting into any of those schools with a 2200.

If I were you, I would look at a gem of a school that is my safety, and this school is soon going to make noise on the rankings list. University of Dallas is a small liberal-arts schools, but over the last twenty years their acceptance rate into med school and law school is well over 90%. You would definitely get in and they're on the Princeton Review's list of best bargains for colleges.

Give UD a look, this school is soon going to be much more well known.

Osmosis, my point wasn't to say that you'll get accepted just because you're from Jordan. It was to say that, given Boston College's Jordanian ties ...

I'm sure the BC adcom is familiar with your hs and will be able to evaluate your acheivements fairly, since you mentioned that as a concern.

There are very likely alumni in Jordan who you can help you learn more about BC/help you out once you graduate. Since visitng BC may not be an option for you, its important to learn about it using the resources available to you in Jordan.

Also -- I read somewhere about a BC scholarship specifically for Jordanian refugees. This may or may not be relevant to you. I haven't been able to find anything on the BC website about it, but I'm sure the admissions people would know more.
