So I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering (which I like so far) with a minor in Industrial Engineering. When I told my uncle about my major he was like, "MECHANICAL? Are u serious? That major and job related that major are gonna be obsolete in few year. On top of that minor in Industrial?" So basically he said I'm getting nowhere with my major? How true is his statement? How is how security for Mechanical Engineers? If it is a good major, is Industrial a good minor, and if it's not, what other minor should I look at for job security?

Your uncle is stupid. ME is arguably the most general and most necessary engineering major. Unless we stop building things all together, we will always need MEs.

Industrial Engineering minor doesn’t mean much to anyone here. IE is very broad, and a minor could be anything. What classes have you taken/will you take for the minor?

I have to choose 2 courses among these four-- Data Analysis, Engineering Economics, Simulation Modeling, Stochastic Models.

I will have to choose 4 courses among these- Case studies in IE, Global Planning and Logistics, Quality Design, Planning and Control, Material Management in Supply Chains, Achieving Operation Excellence, Work systems and Facility Layout.

Which Courses (6 total, 2from top group and 4 from bottom) should I take?

Should I minor in IE or something else?

Contrary to popular belief, American manufacturing output has been going up and up and up for decades. It is employment in American manufacturing which has been declining (though much slower and less dramatically than is commonly believed). IOW, thanks to improved techniques and improved equipment, we are making more with less. Mechanical engineers and industrial engineers have played a large part in this, I imagine.

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t minor in IE. It depends on what you want to do.

My experience with “Engineering Economics” was that it was calculating interest rates. Really just a waste of my money on a class where I didn’t learn anything. I don’t know what it will be at your school but I’d recommend not taking that one. I’d figure Stochastic Models is important for many disciplines and that would be a very good class to take.

Did you have anything in mind when you decided you wanted a minor in IE, or was it just a “hey, this sounds like a good idea” sort of a thing.

My s is a Mech E. Plendy of demand. Plenty of need. That said, I asked him not too long ago if he had it to do over again, would he still do Mech E? He replied that he might have considered Electrical E as it seems to be a bit more in demand. So perhaps you can minor in Electrical?
