Ok, you state that they can afford it, but WILL they pay for it (while it is nice that the financial advisor feels this way but it is not their money)? As far as you taking on some student debt, you can only borrow $5500 (if you have no financial need, that the loan will be unsubsidized-interest accruing from the time you borrow the $$)

MY recommendation is to attend the admitted student days and then make a decision

I’m curious about the apparent consensus that Davidson at half price is not worth the same as UNC at full price- outside of NC, does Davidson not have the same academic reputation that it does within NC?

I doubt that anyone here can offer a rational evaluation of Davidson versus UNC. Speaking from California, Davidson is a non-entity and UNC is a basketball school. You need to go to those forums to figure out which might be best for you.

You seem to really want to go to Dartmouth. This is mainly an issue for you and your parents. I think the rest of us should butt out. I will not take responsibility for telling you to take on debt to attend Dartmouth. No one can tell you that is the right decision. Or the wrong one.

What I can say is that if you go to Dartmouth, I do not think you will regret it.
