Good Business Program
Sunny
Great location
Fun social school
Any Size
Possibly Christian / Catholic (as long as relaxed)

not really in any order particulary..

University of Southern California (Too big of reach? however would be #1 )

UC Irvine (UC! great business program - cheap - slight reach)

UC Davis (No business program, however they have an economics / management which could work, however itd be more math / economics and less business, whicih doesnt appeal to me.. UC! cheap - academic environment - good school - slight reach)

UC Santa Barbara (No business but again bus econ sort of thing which might work, but would prefer regular business by a lot - great socially - great location - great school! UC! cheap - slight reach)

Santa Clara University (great business! jesuit! nice location. good jobs afterwards - silicon vally. - slight teach - expensive)

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (cheap - great business program - awesome campus / location - slight reach)

University of Miami (great business program - great location - id be excited / but a little scared about going all the way to florida - great campus - awesome place - expensive?)

University of San Diego (match - san diego! expensive! great location! everyone who goes there has loved it! beautiful campus - great business programs - catholic - which has its plusses and minuses)

UC Santa Cruz (No business however once again a biz econ program which is jsut ehh.. but UC, cheap, great location, probably the best UC that I'd be for sure in.)

Chapman University (good bus program / good location - expensive? match?)

Loyola Marymount University (visisted and really liked it.. decent business program gorgeous campus - nice kids - 40 min from home - i can see myself here - match / safety expensive?)

San Diego State University (nice financial safety - great business program - great socially - san diego! weather! - cheap!)

my parrents can afford a private education - and i heard its a good year for that with the economy and stuff.. but always cheaper is better. and since my gpa is jsut mehh.. and SATs and EC are good. not all the reccomended classes and a couple Cs, i decided to apply to a variety of places to see where my unique combo could get me in..)

so shouldi apply to all 12?? narrow some?? know any other colleges that meet my criteria?
any advice?? thanks!!

also how do the biz/econ majors compare to just plain business majors??

University of Southern California (Too big of reach? however would be #1 )

Yes, it’s a big reach but since you love it you should apply.

UC Irvine (UC! great business program - cheap - slight reach)

Yes, it’s a bit of a reach, but it sounds like the best UC for you There’s no point in going to a school (the other UCs on your list) that doesn’t offer a business major if that’s what you think you’d like to study. Economics isn’t even similar.

Santa Clara University (great business! jesuit! nice location. good jobs afterwards - silicon vally. - slight teach - expensive)

You should apply because it might be a great option.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (cheap - great business program - awesome campus / location - slight reach)

I’m not sure I’d apply here for business. I think tech majors are its specialty, so the business program may be treated like a bit of a step-sister.

University of Miami (great business program - great location - id be excited / but a little scared about going all the way to florida - great campus - awesome place - expensive?)

Your out of state option. Exciting perhaps, but I wouldn’t choose it over your other options. On the other hand it is the most like USC.

University of San Diego (match - san diego! expensive! great location! everyone who goes there has loved it! beautiful campus - great business programs - catholic - which has its plusses and minuses)

Strong option. Definitely apply.

Chapman University (good bus program / good location - expensive? match?)

I have mixed feelings about this one, but I’d probably apply and compare it to your other options.

Loyola Marymount University (visisted and really liked it… decent business program gorgeous campus - nice kids - 40 min from home - i can see myself here - match / safety expensive?)

Might be the ideal school for you. Will likely be the one against which you will measure all the others.

San Diego State University (nice financial safety - great business program - great socially - san diego! weather! - cheap!)

Also definitely apply. Like USD it’s a strong option.

***I didn’t comment on the schools you listed that don’t have business programs because economics isn’t a fair comparison… If you think you may want to study business, chose a school that keeps that option open for you. Transferring because you’ve discovered your school doesn’t offer your major isn’t fun, especially once you’ve made friends.

Edited to add that this is a solid list and you did a great job matching yourself to schools!

Thanks soo much!

Great help, and I agree with much you said. Thanks for taking the time and going in depth.

Taking out SB, D, & SC would take me down to 9, which would be an ideal number to apply to.

Thankss so much!!!

i think cal poly slo’s bus program is actually quite good. but i heard its basically pure vocational traning - pure business, and not a university feel / liberal education.

thanks again soo much! i agree that lmu would be the one to cmpare to. i also think USD might be really good too.

would you say my match / reach / safetys ratings are correct??

thankss again!!

anyone else wanna give feedback??

i also have mixed feelings and agree with exactly what you said bout chapman. you gave excelellent advice, thanks again.

does this look about right??

Big Reach:

  1. University of Southern California
    Slight Reach:
  2. UC Irvine
  3. Santa Clara University
    High Match:
  4. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
  5. University of Miami
  6. University of San Diego
    Low Match:
  7. Chapman University
  8. Loyola Marymount University
    Safety:
  9. San Diego State University </p>

is that about right? / in order of difficulty?

That looks good, though I might consider Loyola a match. I too think Cal Poly might lack the atmosphere you want. And I worry about SDSU and the CA budget, because such things always seem to find a way to impact students negatively. I think you have an excellent list. It’s well balanced and has a lot of variety, but at the same time each school encompasses many of the features you want. If you’re looking to reduce the number of applications you write, I would eliminate Miami, and if you want to reduce it further, I might reconsider Cal Poly and/or Chapman. I think the rest are all excellent options, and I would check to see if Loyola offers early action or rolling admissions, as they are non-binding and I think it would make your senior year sweeter if you had an early admission to a school you love.

thanks again dntw8up! very helpful again.

SDSU is definitely NOT a safety at all. It might actually be a reach for you. Especially for business, it has become a very difficult admit. I know someone with MUCH higher stats than you–grades, test scores and EC’s who never got off the waitlist this year. It’s probably a much more difficult admit than LMU or USD, especially with this economy–people are far less willing to take out big loans, and college savings funds are way down–I know we lost 40% of ours, but it is coming back up. I don’t expect to recoup it all, and I’ll bet there will be plenty of parents like us who will have their kids opt for state schools if possible. Also, with budget cuts the state schools are all reducing their admission numbers.

LMU and USD are both excellent choices. I know 2 recent business major graduates from USD who are doing very well. They both say they got a great education, and made great connections. LMU is a great school especially for business. Really a dream place. Good luck!

kk thank you very much sopranomom92! Yeah, I agree. SDSU is probably more of a match. Well, they do it purely on math + critical reading SAT. Which for me is 1400 (really good). and weighted gpa (mine is 3.45) , and when you do their formula, mine would of made the cut off for this year, been a little lower than the average… But thanks for the info! Yeah with the economy and stuff this year, it would probably be even harder, and overcrowded, taking me 6 years to graduate too.

Yeah, right now LMU & USD, I’m seeing them both as matches (that right) and are two of the collegs that I’m most intersted. I know USDs business school is great, it’s ranked quite high in rankings. I heard LMUs is just pretty good in business.

thanks for the feedback!

Here’s my new list.

Probables:

  1. University of Miami
-Top 30 business program. Great location / campus. Little scared, but excited to go to Florida. Probably be a high match / slight reach.
  2. Santa Clara University
-Great business program. Jesuit. Silicon Valley connect. Great campus! Probably be a high match / slight reach.
  3. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
-Great business. Great area / campus. Cheap. Purely career based / not liberal arts / university education. Probably be a slight reach.
  4. University of San Diego
-Great business program! San Diego! Weather – Great campus! Catholic (which has its ups and downs) Probably would be a high match.
  5. Chapman University
-Great Business program. Orange County. Probably would be a match.
  6. Loyola Marymount University
-Visisted and liked a lot. Pretty good business program. Great location / campus. 40 minutes from home. Jesuit. Probably would be a match.
  7. San Diego State University
-Great business program. San Diego! Cheap. Overcroding / economy stuff. Probably take 5-6 years to graduate. Probably would be a low match.

Maybes:

  1. University of Southern California
-Too big of a reach. But have Alumni.
  2. UC Davis
-No business major. However, still a UC. Probably a slight reach.
  3. UC Santa Barbara
-No business major, but really good business / economics major. Perfect weather, great campus / location. Fun school. Probably a slight reach.
  4. UC Santa Cruz
-The best UC I could most likely get into. No business. Probably a match.
  5. UC Irvine
-New business major, only accepting 150 students. Steep competition. Not that great socially of a school. Probably a slight reach.
  6. Arizona State University
-Possible chance at the Honors College? Great college environment / experience. Interesting business majors like Health Care Management & Supply Chain Management Probably a safety.

I’ll probably just add UCSB / UCI / & ASU to my list.

U Miami : Bad place if you want an internship (what I heard when I was investigating as a possible school)
