Help me narrow my list?

Would anyone like to help me norrow my college list?

Amherst C
Cornell U
Hamilton C (NY)
Ithaca C
Pace U
Skidmore C
SUNY Binghamton
SUNY Geneseo
Syracuse U
Yale U

I want to be a writer (fiction). I'm fairly smart.. um, ask me any questions you like and give opinions on any and all colleges on my list. Thank you!!!!!!!!! :-D

oops I meant “narrow” sorry.

k then thanks

If you tell people what your likes/dislikes are, it will help people narrow the list.

What are you SAT/ACT scores? How are your grades? What are your biggest extracurricular activities?

What size school do you want to attend?
What major(s) are you interested in?
What type of school atmosphere do you want?
What types of factors led you to your list as it is?

Use some common sense - we can’t help you narrow your list unless you help us figure out how to do so.

oh, sorry. :-)

well my grades are good (GPA about 93) I haven’t gotten my SATs back but did VERY well on the PSATs (98th percentle)

I would like to major (or concentrate, depending on what is offered) in creative writing.

I am not a fan of city schools - I wanted ones with cute colege towns around.

I am not afriad of big schools but I would prefer smaller class sizes.

Hope that helps, thanks :-D

Yale is very urban. You might look to see what schools sponsor writing workshops and also look at the faculty in writing. Examine their webpages and see if you feel a tug toward any of them. That said, your list is a reasonable length now. Visit some schools over the summer - even thought campus will be quiet, you can get a feel for the setting.

is that 93 weighted or unweighted?? I don’t know if that can get you into stuff like cornell or yale.
do you take any AP’s?
and from what im getting at is that you dont like bigger schools? cause syracuse and binghamton are 10000+ students

You don’t seem to be a big fan of big schools or else I would have suggested Rutgers (Ranked #17 USNWR in English). However, you seem to be from NY and out-of-state might be expensive.

Also check out Johns Hopkins

JHU has great creative writing seminars, and Amherst has a well-known English department.

Why do you want to narrow your list? It doesn’t seem too terribly long at the moment, especially by CC standards. Do you really love any of these schools? Amherst ED could be a great decision for an English lover.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Yes - the 93 is unweighted.

I keep forgetting that you guys aren’t like me - my mom is only going to let me apply to 3 or 4 schools.

But maybe me and my Dad will convince her to let me apply to, hmm… five or six?

nemom - good idea about the web pages and all. that’s what I’ve been doing and it’s helped.

3 to 4 schools??? Whoa this isn’t 1960. That’s a terrible idea in this environment. With everyone else applying between 10-12, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. I am now attending a school (Brown) I originally didn’t have on my list (applied anyway for the heck of it), I got in and love it. I know this kid who was WL at Harvard and had no other reaches or high matches and is probably going to his state school. I think he regrets it, don’t you think he would have liked Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Princeton, Dartmouth, Northwestern…

One way to get your parents to allow you to apply to more schools is by picking them off this list: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/444532-list-colleges-free-apply.html

I can only assume the cost of applications is their concern, because as admitone pointed out, this is an extremely competitive environment and you don’t want to put all your eggs in one (or even three) basket.

As for your list, Syracuse’s [Newhouse School of Public Communications](http://newhouse.syr.edu/) is a fantastic school. It’s not really English or writing fiction, but if your interests in writing branch out beyond novels, poetry, etc. you might really enjoy the Television-Radio-Film major, specifically the focus on screenwriting and dramatic writing, or even Advertising, specifically copywriting.

To match your interests more directly, though, schools like Skidmore, Ithaca, and Cornell provide great environments for writers (and the college town has great cafe’s/coffee shops where you can sit and write for hours!)

Thanks all.

I think you all are right that I should apply to a few more schools than that. I’d like to apply to six or so.

djtopps - thanks for all the info. Cornell is my dream school At the moment, partially for that reason. Syracuse is also intreresting to me becuase I have lots of interests and they have lots of majors. I think I’d have to visit that one though.

Syracuse may seem big but it gets intimate fast and you see the same faces quite often. We’re relatively medium compared to other schools.

really? good to hear. I’ll visit there and see. :-)
