Hi, Ive been searching for college for sometime. I started with a pretty large list, but after tours and research I have only 2 left. I’m looking for a smal school on the east coast, preferably New England, with English/communications or a major applicable to a career in journalism. My one necessity is a school newspaper. As of now I’ll be applying to Clark university, and the Massachusetts college of liberal arts, but would love to have more options. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
it would help people if they knew what you had on your list, and have taken off already as well as your stats and budget.
I’m on the fence about Emerson, and removed Sarah Lawrence, point park university, Columbia of Chicago, American, and muhlenberg.
My current UW gpa is a 3.8 and I got an 1160 on the new SAT which I’m taking again this weekend. I’m in AP lit/comp. English is by far my strongest subject so I think I will do fine on the exam. I have quite a few extracurriculars. I play softball, and ice hockey, and do theatre, choir, yearbok, and am an honors society member at my school. Through honors society I have also done a lot of community service. Luckily my parents have saved up for my college for along time so money isn’t a huge factor. @eandesmom
Look at Boston University. You’ll need to nudge that SAT up (they weight scores less than GPA/rigor BUT a higher score can only increase your odds) and show course rigor behind that 3.8, but they have a top ranked journalism program (look at BU COM) and a great student paper (The Daily Free Press).
Why are you on the fence, re: Emerson? It’s also great, though I’m less familiar with whether they have a paper.
If you’re really gunning for journalism, look at Mizzou, too. It’s hands down one of the best journalism schools in the country.
@proudterrier I am on the fence about Emerson due to Its campus, or lack their of. after touring many different options I prefer a campus to a school like Emerson, built into the city. BU is a good school but far to big. I’m looking for a much smaller school preferably under 5,000
Johnson State
Keene State
Eastern CT
University of Maine at Farmington
Rivier
Bowdoin or Bates (apply test optional)
Just to be clear, is your family expected to be full-pay due to income/assets? It makes a difference as far as how high you can reach.
How about Dickinson?
Clark U is a good choice. Hampshire College, Wheaton College. If you want to venture outside of your preferred area look at Ithaca College (NY) which is mid-sized and known for its school of communications.
Apply test - optional to Dickinson, Denison, Ithaca, Muhlenberg, Wheaton MA, Goucher, St Michael’s, St Bonaventure.
Add Fordham if money truly is no concern.
Mizzou journalism is tops in the country.
Have you taken three subject tests (could be English, History, and a foreign language)? You could try to apply to some ‘test flexible’ colleges?
