Help me please Parents have no SSN

@thumper1 You are right- I mixed it up, my students got a tax transcript which they provided to their university along with a copy of the tax return (which parent certified was correct and true) and the parent without a SSN completed the declaration of no SSN and no income.

@dude20- thumper is right- the form is not that difficult to fill out. Go google for some instructional videos on how to do it plus there is a pop-up box to the right that tells you where to find the tax forms on your parent’s tax return. Read edvisors website- they tell you how to fill it out. Also look in your community for any presentation on how to fill out the form. Our library in our barrio has a “how to fill out the FASFA” night that is free for students/parents. This link has some events listed. https://www.startheregetthere.org/find-an-event.html

Here is one resource from New York on how to fill it out. https://www.startheregetthere.org/ Also see this: https://www.hesc.ny.gov/pay-for-college/apply-for-financial-aid/apply-for-aid-start-here/completing-the-fafsa.html

FYI, the IRS data tool might not work - it did not work for me. The FAFSA allows you to enter the data from the tax return manually - but they don’t take your word for it. After you submit the data, they eventually send you an email requesting more documents through the IDOC website. I had to scan the 1040 tax return to a PDF and upload on the IDOC website. Also submitted the IRS transcript. Be aware of that if you are approaching deadlines.

@WISdad23

All colleges do NOT use the IDOC. To be honest, it’s used by very few colleges relatively speaking. If the college doesn’t use IDOC, you cannot just decide to use it. The colleges using IDOC are only a small number of the Profile schools.

You were able to use IDOC because YOUR colleges did so. This student very well might not have that option…or may not have it for all of his schools.

To the OP…you need to check YOUR colleges for what to do. Since you can’t link to the ITS DRT, it is highly likely you will be asked to submit a tax transcript for the parent who had income. For the parent who didn’t work, you will need a non-filers statement.

Yes…some additional steps to take. But once completed…on time…this should not affect your need based aid. It’s just some additional steps.

Hmm - good to know. Daughter has applied to 3 schools so far. FAFSA sent an email stating the form was “processed” which I assume is the same as “complete.”

If you are asked to provide information for verification, you will have to provide a tax transcript. You can plan ahead by ordering the 2015 tax transcript at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript. Do this now, and keep it in a safe place where you can easily find it if asked to provide a copy.

  1. File the FAFSA using all 000's as ssnnumbers for both your mother and father 2.you can fill out the financial piece by using the information from you dad'staxes 3.since neither of your parents are eligible for a FSA ID,you must fill out the signature page One of your parents must sign the signature image and then you mail it to the federal prossesor

College
All students who currently attends a NYC public school and falls in one of the following categories:
Free/reduced lunch
Lives in the shelter system
Lives in NYC public housing are eligible for a CUNY fee waiver You will get the code from your GC/ AP /principal or college access person at your school

You can apply for up to 6 CUNY schools. If you meet the income guidelines for seek/college discovery,check the box and fill out the information. You can only get into an opportunity program as a first time freshman. However College discovery turns into SEEK at the 4 year CUNY Schools. It turns I to EOP at the SUNY schools and HEOP at approximately 60 private schools on NYS including Columbus, Cornell, Fordham, NYU, Syracuse, etc.

Your transcripts will automatically be pulled for Suny or CUNY from the NYC Doe

If your income allows you to apply EOP, you can get EOP while attending Suny committee college. If you are applying to SUNY cc, do not apply using the SUNY portal. Apply directly through the SUNY CC website where the application is free (Suny Adirondack charges $35 but you can have you GC contact them to waive the fee)

There are at least 3 brand new EOP Cc programs ; Niagara, Jefferson and Adirondack.

Corning CC which does not have EOP has the Binghamton express

Sat scores:

While CUNY 2 year schools no not require scores the 4 year schools require scores. You can use CUNY code 2950 so this one code will send your scores to every CUNY that you apply to

College readiness, unless you have the following;

70 on the common core math regents or an 80 on the standard math regents

75 on the common core or standard English regents.

You will not be college ready at CUNY

If you are not college ready through either your SAT scores or the regents scores you will have to take the CUNY placement test. If you need remedial course, you only have one year to complete them or you will be dismissed

If you are going to CUNY and you do not get college discovery ( you must be financially disadvantaged with a gpa below 80),then apply to CUNY ASAP- they will cover tuition books and metrocards.

Get a copy of your dad’s IRS transcript. As @kelsmon says you will need it before you get any actual $$ at CUNY or SUNY. If you apply to Seek/College discovery, you will need the transcript as part of your application process

If you have an IEP talk to your GC or transition coordinator about applying for ACCES-VR services , which will help you with additional funding for college

OP, sometimes it helps to print a hard copy. This worksheet might help. https://fafsa.ed.gov/fotw1718/pdf/fafsaws17c.pdf

The SUNY welcome center will have financial aid days after the holidays.
There are financial aid information sessions at SUNY @ West 42nd street this Thursday and next Thursday at 6 on. Ask your GC about registering

Your GC can also refer you to some college acces providers who assist families in filing the paperwork for free
