It's helped me through my whole life, as I can visualize equations, memorize sequences of numbers (fist 70+ digits of pi), and has just become a big part of my daily life.

I didn't even realize it was different until I found out other people didn't have the same perceptions as I did. I'm trying to turn this into an essay topic because I thought it was pretty cool/unique, but I'm having some difficulty. Anyone have any ideas? :)

That would be very good. I am not sure I completely understand how color synthesia would appear in your head, but it might be a cool idea to start off the essay talking in colors? You know what I mean? Like start the essay off as a description of how you would see a set of numbers or a set of words. Sorry if I can’t be any more clear!

Then you can talk about finding out how you were different (and of course mention how that made you feel)

Finally you can say how much it has helped you in life and what you plan on doing with your gift (assuming you do consider it to be a gift, I know I would!)

One of my best friends (class of '12) just wrote her personal statement on her synesthesia… got into USC, NYU, lots of good schools. It’s a great topic, but unfortunately I didn’t read her essay. But it’s definetly feasable and unique!

Are you applying to any schools where you can submit a video (like Tufts)? This would be so cool, visually, and easy to show you thinking in colors.

If not, I would follow Lehigh’s advice – maybe start with you as a kid learning something, and we “hear” your brain working: The capital of Nebraska is…Lincoln. And Lincoln glows in deep purple. Montpelier – green. Albany – white.

Then you’re studying with a friend and you mutter something about “oh yeah – Montpelier’s green” and you realize your brain works differently than other people’s.

Then a scene where you realize how helpful this trait is.

Fascinating, I’ve heard of it before but to actually speak to someone who has this ability, what an opportunity!

I don’t know if you have read “Flatland” but you remind me of the character who lived in the 3rd dimension trying to explain his universe to the flatlanders in the 2nd dimension.

Your challenge is to translate how this unique ability allows you to perform feats which don’t come to people ordinarily. What are the mechanics behind it, how is the information being processed differently simply because data is rendered into colors?

As someone who doesn’t have this condition I am clueless as to how it actually helps you in daily life. If my brain assigned a different color to every number, how does this benefit me? I think of 6,237 and I see (for example), cyan, red, beige and burnt orange. My ability to remember numbers is no better than color sequences, so where is the value? Or is it like a snapshot whereby an entire sequence of colors can be recognized just as quickly as I would recognize a dog based on it having certain characteristics?

You mentioned that it helped with memorization, does the visualization component also help to manipulate data? If so, how is this done?

Great topic. If you can make someone like me comprehend what goes on inside your head, that is a real accomplishment.

Yeah, the visualization of the numbers seems to be another aid in remembering numbers. For example, at my internship I was in charge of assigning contract ID numbers to different products; usually a string of about 7-8 numbers. While the other interns constantly flipped back and forth between the ID page and the product page, one glance at the contract ID was all I needed to keep the number in my head, allowing me to be extremely efficient w/ the task.

Oh, and phone numbers are easy to remember
PM me if you have any other questions! I’d love to talk about it with someone also!

Dang I wrote a long response but it got deleted. Well that sucks. Long story short:

You have 2 goals. Goal 1 is to become an expert on subject so that you know the best language to use when writing about it. Goal 2 is to find an interesting spin, so that your essay is differentiated from the Wikipedia page. What does your essay tell the reader about your character?

This hasn’t been posted on in a while, but I was wondering how you essay is going/went. I’m writing one of my essays on my own synesthesia. Mine is different – I ‘taste’ words and involuntarily assign personalities to names. It would be cool to read each others essays sometime. :)
