help me with Financial burden

Dear everyone,

I am an international transfer student and currently a sophomore at Arizona state university.

I chose to go ASU because I could stay with my relatives in order to save my living expense. However, the school fee is soaring and now fee alone is $20,000 per year.
I could get private loan from Sallimae, but the interest rate is insanely high like 13%.

I do not understand why the tuition fee is increased while everyone is suffering from economics crisis and moreover $355 is charged every semester for the "Economic Recovery Surcharge" which I do not know.

I am worrying how to finance to go on to my bachelor degree with such expense. My family income only comes from my mom. So it is heavy burden for her.

Moreover, As for being a transfer student, a lot of scholarships are limited.

Is there any other good schools which has less fee and provide scholarships to international transfer student?

Unfortunately, the greater the financial problems states have, the less money states have to subsidize education. Sometimes state colleges tack on fees, because they are forbidden by state legislature to raise tuition, or the state somehow takes some portion of tuition money but doesn’t touch the fees. All this happens when costs for colleges are rising.

Your cheapest option is to live with your relatives and go to a community college for your second year, then transfer to a four year college for your last two years of college.

You can search the college board, [:: College Planning Made Easy | Inside Source for College Admissions Requirements](http://www.collegeboard.com/), for some cheaper schools. For example, the college board, [College Search - City University of New York: CUNY Online - Cost & Financial Aid](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board), reports The City University of New York (CUNY) Online’s tuition is $4,980 for this year.

Thanks. I found Brigham Young University whose tuition is pretty cheap like $4,290 for international student.

Is it very hard for international transfer student to get in? What is the minimum GPA for admission?
Does it have a strong CS major?

BYU is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and thus has an environment which is not for everyone. See here: [Student life at Brigham Young University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Student life at Brigham Young University - Wikipedia)

For fall semester BYU admitted 1,325/2,182 transfer students. See here: [College Search - Brigham Young University - BYU - Admission](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Does it mean I am not allowed to apply for the admission? oh no…

Even if i’m allowed to do so, the chances are too thin?

There isn’t a quick fix - to find a more affordable school will probably require you really spending a lot of time researching your options for transfer.

I am guessing it may be too late for you to transfer this year to another 4-year college. You could potentially attend a local community college for your sophomore year and attempt to transfer for your junior year, but there are no guarantees you’ll find a cheaper situation, especially if you have to move away and pay for your living quarters (dorm, rent, etc) on top of tuition.

The bottom line is that first of all, 20K a year for an international student is not that expensive. It isn’t easy for almost anyone to pay that kind of tuition, but it isn’t an insane price, either.

Are you working? In theory, you could make 10K a year between part-time work in the school year and full-time in the summers.

And while this might seem a shocking option, some students may take off a full year or more to work full-time to earn money for college. Do you have a work permit?

And finally, what are your options back in your home country? College prices in America are just going to continue to go up and up. Possibly shockingly so. If you think the price jumps this year were bad, they could easily go up even more next year.

A few years back in California, the public colleges went up 25 - 35% in one year and did another few shocking jumps the years before/after as well. This year, the jump was only about 10% but that doesn’t mean next year might not be another shocking year.

In other words, it is bad all over, it is probably going to get worse. Perhaps your college is not as bad as you think price-wise. And you will have to be flexible and creative to get through all the changes that are happening right now.

Good luck.

Hey. No, you can still apply for BYU, even if you’re not a Mormon. It’s just that, the environment there and the dynamic will be slightly different. If you have an open mind though, I’m sure it could work out fine.

Also, I think it’s more expensive if you don’t belong to the Church of Latter-day Saints. But yeah, look into that. It still is a good school. Mitt Romney graduated from there, for instance. :)

Hey! thank you guys for your advice and info! I do appreciate it.

You can search for colleges and universities by tuition and fees with the College MatchMaker [College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) Unfortunately, you still will have to visit each website to find what the room-and-board situation is like.
