So I am applying to Trinity and writing the optional why essay. In the prompt it says "Is there something particular about Duke that attracts you?" I am wondering if I could write something not related to academics. I love basketball and one of my major reasons for Duke is the Blue Devil! Would it be OK if I only write about my interests in basketball without mentioning the curriculum at Duke?

Yes that’s fine. I didn’t write about the academics. They just want to know why you want to go there

I help with local alumni interviews of applicants, although I have absolutely no insider information about what happens in the Admissions Office. They provide a name and contact information, then I report on what we discussed.

During my interviews a discussion of “Why Duke?” will come up in one form or another. Roughly 80% of applicants mention basketball and almost 100% mention general academics/reputation.

Feel free to use the two topics in your essay, especially if your essay reflects unbridled passion. However, keep in mind that adcoms will probably have a huge number of essays discussing the same topic.
