For my Why Duke essay, I'm debating whether or not to add a sentence about the basketball. I'm not a big sports fan or anything, and basketball isn't a sport I enjoy playing or watching. At the same time, though, I know I'll go to a game at least once in my four years, and I also feel like I would be remiss not to mention it at all.

Thoughts? The other thing is, if I take out the basketball sentence, I can add in a sentence about the FOCUS program.

Write about what you are actually passionate about A sentence about a program you are interested in will go a lot farther than a disingenuous one about basketball. Besides, think about how many people are going to write about Duke basketball. Good luck!

I’m a tour guide at Duke, and I can tell you that the number 1 thing people write about is DukeEngage. Number 2 is basketball. If it’s not important to you, then don’t write about it. FOCUS is an excellent choice because it shows you did your research about the university.

sm1123 and nemesis nailed it. Can you imagine how tired the application reviewers become reading about basketball (especially if conveyed without passion and/or without a tie to a compelling reason to admit)!!
