I am having trouble deciding between 3 majors at the moment:

Aerospace Engineering (currently accepted)
Mechanical Engineering
Civil Engineering

I'm not looking for the "whatever you enjoy most" answers but more pragmatic explanations as to why one might be better/worse than another. Basically I want your JUSTIFIED opinions on which is better (or which one you would do if you had to choose) to help me make my choice.

if pay is at all a concern for you, consider Petroleum Engineering

Other than “what you like and expect to do as a career,” you can look at the salaries of the three, but the difference is minimal when it comes to averages. Payscale shows Aerospace to be up top, while others differ. With so much left to explore out in space, I’d say you can’t go wrong with Aerospace engineering. My cousin is also majoring in that field. As for mechanical and civil, they both seem a little bland to me. Both are on the top when it comes to what bachelor’s degree makes the most start-off pay.

Hope this helps.

Petroleum engineering seems to always come out on top.

Payscale numbers are different from other sites.

Honestly, its going to come down to what YOU want to do. Other people’s opinions/online searching will just give you a jist of what the job entails/what you will make financially.

Good luck.

Ooops! Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have done research on the wages. I am really looking for OPINIONS as to why you would choose one of the other. For instance “I woud choose Aerospace because Mechanical and Civil are bland”

Well, I’m a civil engineer (structural) and it’s a wonderful field. One thing that appeals to me is that I can be my own boss. My husband and I work out of our house. We can work whatever weird hours we want. If we want to take off to Vegas for a long weekend, we do it! We’ve had our own firm for 11 years now, and it’s much steadier employment than working for someone else.

It’s also REALLY cool to drive around town and see the buildings we’ve designed. My husband designed a public market building that won awards and is recognizable by anyone who lives in the area. Our kids like pointing to different structures and saying, “That’s ‘Mom’s Building’”! I also worked on dams, factories, power plants, parking garages, etc. Every building is different, and the challenge of putting them together never gets old. It has never seemed bland to me - sometimes I wish it were a little MORE boring!

I haven’t checked, but have you posted this on the engineering board on College Confidential? You’ll get more advice than you could ever use on there, lol.
