I am currently a freshman at Fordham and I am in the honors program at the business school. Unfortunately, I have been very unhappy so far and I want to leave here as soon as I can. I know I can't transfer to any of the schools I would like for the spring, but I plan to go to my community college for the spring term and then transfer to a different school next year. Will leaving Fordham for the community college look bad? I don't want to put myself at a disadvantage when transferring. As of midterms, I have an A- average and I have a 2230 SAT and 4th in my class in high school. I would like to transfer to Cornell, Lehigh, or Villanova. I wish I could stay here the whole year, but I am very unhappy and I don't think I can continue to do well for much longer. Thanks for all of your help!

Wouldn’t it be more difficult to have to switch schools for just one semester instead of staying at the reputable college you’re in right now? If I were you I’d think long and hard about what is making me so unhappy and try to work a way around that for another semester. The schools you apply to will most likely want to know why you switched and you’d have to give them a pretty good reason other than “I was unhappy”.

well trust me its more than just being unhappy…its more like getting feelings of anxiety and feeling terrible and feeling like i cant do my work anymore. I would love to stay here, but I dont want to stay another semester and be extremely unhappy and have my grades suffer

Now that’s out of the way, you should do what’s best for you. I hate when people say you should just “stick it out” and “work a way around”. The fact is that if things are that horrible for you, spending a semester in community college is no where near as bad as the worse case scenario of staying at your current university. Of course the ideal situation is that you stay at Fordham until you can transfer to a school you prefer but if you can’t stick it out there’s no sense in staying in a place that’s causing you anxiety, which may ultimately cause your grades to dip and possibly ruin any chance of actually getting into the schools you really wish to go to.

If asked you can be honest about your experiences at Fordham, you can also speak of how going to a community helped save money etc.

Thanks a lot. Go Nova! I just really hope colleges won’t look at me in a bad way it put me at a disadvantage. Because in high school I did extremely well and I’m doing well now and I want to be at a good school.
