I originally post this thread in the HSL but a HS student told my to post it here. Well, parents - I hope you could help me on this!

My parents have always been keeping me inside the house in my home country (Vietnam). They believe that the outside is too dangerous hence they wouldn't let me stay out later than 8pm. It's because of traffic(believe it or not, traffic in VN kills more people than in the war), drugs, and petty crimes that occurs daily. Now that I'm in the US, they want me to enroll into a community college for the sake of being near them and cost. But most of all, they want me to stay next to them. How should I convince them that I'm mature/independent enough after so many years locked up?

Try to find out what the financial situation is. If money is very tight, doing your first two years at your local community college may indeed be a good solution – and perhaps not as restrictive as you think. Unless you have access to really good public transportation that serves both your home neighborhood and the campus, you are going to need a car, and that will give you a degree of freedom you have not had before.

At the same time, make sure that your parents understand that in this country, you cannot complete a four-year college degree at a community college. You can only go to community college for two years, after which you need to transfer to a regular, four-year college for the last two years. So your parents are only postponing your independence for two years; they’re not preventing it.
