Hi all, Can I get a little help with college merit aid info. We live in chicago and the state colleges in Illinois have a lot higher instate tuition than many other states.
My son has scored a 28 on his act has a 4.6 weighted GPA on a 5 scale, a 4.02 unweighted, he would love to go out of state, maybe Alabama, Auburn,Kentucky,Mississippi or maybe louiville or Tennessee, But we are open to anywhere that will give us a good scholarship. Can he get Merit aid and how much can he get?

He has taken the ACT 5 Times and he scored a 28 the second time all others were 27. So I guess we will have to deal with the 28. Please help the more scholarship information the better as we are not sure yet were to go. Thanks

I’ll stick my neck out here…I don’t think a 28 ACT composite is going to net significant merit aid for an out of state student. BUT perhaps I’m wrong. I know there are folks here who know far more than I do about the guaranteed merit awards at Ole Miss, 'Bama. I thought the ACT composite for their awards was above 30. But I could be wrong.

The projected cost of attendance for UIUC is about $27K for the year for an instate student. The cost of U of Mississippi is about the same for an OOS student.

Mississippi State might be an option, though it doesn’t look like there’s guaranteed merit $ for ACTs of below 30, their academic scholarship guidelines seem flexible.

Don’t know about other states but our large state U requires an ACT of 32 or over for any significant (meaning more than a couple of thousand dollars) scholarships.

Thought this might help in reference to the University of Mississippi:

There are some schools that are less expensive, even for OOS students. Look to schools like South Dakota, Montana, Bemidji State, or even one of the SUNY’s if you want a decent OOS tuition rate.

There are some states that offer in state tution for out of state students from neighboring states. I don’t know if Illinois is part of one of these “reciprical agreements.”
