Help needed for a transfer student in undergrad

I posted the same question over at Transfer Students board, but figured I might be able to get even more perspective here.

I'm a beginning transfer student at CSU Long Beach (Journalism major and Spanish minor / transferring from Santa Monica College with an AA degree) and my plan post-graduation is to pursue a master's degree in Sociology at a prestigious university.

Assuming that I have a highly competitive GPA and GRE score by the time I graduate CSULB, how likely am I to get into some of the best graduate programs out there in Sociology? My wishlist ranges from Ivy League schools to Berkley, UCLA, UChicago and etc. Generally speaking, what are my chances?

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You’ll want to take a lot of sociology undergraduate courses to build a foundation in the field - perhaps even a minor.

And get to know as many of your professors as possible. Undergrad teaching assistant positions (if available) and otherwise being a likeable star student in their classes will be especially helpful in getting good letters of recommendation for you. Since you won’t have the benefit of having known any of the profs from fresh/soph classes, you need to make a name for yourself early and often (and positively!!!)
