Dear Reader...
I live in Orlando Florida, and I am looking for opportunities that I can volunteer or work at a clinic or hospital. Can you guys give me some ideas that can help me find the opportunities to work at clinic or hospital?

Thank you very much

Hi Mike,
I'm not familiar with any area of Florida (I'm from PA and go to school in Ohio) but you can always search for local hospitals and try to find the contact info for a volunteer coordinator. I contacted the volunteer coordinator at a local hospital when I was in junior high and started volunteering, at first only in the gift shop, but then when I got to high school, I was able to actually work with patients, transporting them to physical/occupational therapy, bringing them drinks, sitting and chatting with them, etc.

Another possibility I wish I would have looked into in high school is contacting universities in your area. They may have a hospital on campus where you can volunteer, and they undoubtedly have tons of research going on. Depending on your age and their rules, they might not allow you to do much, but even just shadowing researchers would be supercool (I think).

If you know any doctors, nurses, etc. in your area, ask them if they know of any cool opportunities! And if you don't get an answer from one number, find another number to call. It might be tricky at first, but if you keep at it, you will find somewhere to have a meaningful volunteer experience :-)

Also--something else to check out would be Camp Boggy Creek. Have you heard of it? I know it's in Florida, and a bunch of my pre-med friends and others have volunteered there (you can volunteer for a week at a time, it's not an ongoing time commitment, but you can stay for several weeks and make it an ongoing time commitment!). It's not medical exactly, but you are a camp counselor for sick children, so many of the issues involved in being a doctor arise.

Hope this helps!

I also live in Orlando, FL. I'm not sure what sort of volunteership activity you are looking at, but one possibility is ORMC (Orlando Regional Medical Center), which actually has a bunch of hospitals in this area ( Lucerne (near downtown), St.Cloud, and others). You can volunteer there, I did it for a summer, it was pretty cool because i signed up for long term rehabilitation unit, where you get more patient contact. I personally think its always better to volunteer in a division or area where you get more contact with patients and stuff, rather than clerical work.

As for an actual job? I have no idea.
