Help on a couple ACT math problems

Took a practice and just got totally ***ed out by a couple problems. Please explain how you got each one, I'll leave answer key at bottom. I thought the practice test was kind of sketch but idk.

The solution set of which of the following equations is the set of real numbers that are 5 units from -3 ?
A. x+3=5
B. x-3=5
C. x+5=3
D. X-5=3
F. x+5= -3

In the equation x^2 + mx + n = 0, m and n are integers. The only possible value for x is -3. What is the value of m ?
A. 3
B. -3
C. 6
D. -6
E. 9

Marcia makes and sells handcrafted picture frames in 2 sizes: small and large. It takes her 2 hours to make a small frame and 3 hours to make a large frame. For making and selling small s small frames and l large frames, Marcia makes a profit of 30s + 70l dollars. Marcia sells all the frames she makes.

For every hour that Marcia spends making frames in the second week of December each year, she donates $3 from the weeks profit to a local charity. This year, Marcia made 4 large frames and 2 small frames in that week. Which of the following is closest to the percent of that weeks profit Marcia donated to charity?
A. 6%
B. 12%
C. 14%
D. 16%
E. 19%

1st one - A 2nd one - C 3rd one - C

Okay, so my methods for getting these were a little…shifty I guess haha, but I still got them right!

The first one: There are only two numbers that are 5 units from -3, which are -8 and 2. So I pretty much plugged both these numbers into the equations as x (guess and check) and it just so happened that A worked. (I was a little skeptical so I did look at the next one, but obviously those didn’t work). A little unorthodox I guess, but I don’t know any better way of solving.

Second: I got this one wrong too- it was hard. I tried it again, and I think I got it, but don’t quote me. The general equation for a quadratic is a^2+ 2ab+b^2. If you were to foil this, with x and m instead, (forget n, no one cares about n. Looking for m.) you would get (x+m)(x+m). Plug -3 in: (-3+m)(-3+m). SO, m has to be 3. BUT in the problem equation it’s just mx. The normal equation is 2mx. So you would have to multiply m by 2 to get the m in the equation of the problem. Sorry if that’s confusing.

Third one: All you do is use the numbers given. To make 4l and 2s frames it takes 16 hours. They would make $340 making those frames. 16x3=48, which is how much they donate to charity. 48/340 gives you your percentage- 14%.

I hope that helped! Help me on my math question??

^ Second one: You did it in a complicated way. Since x is -3 and only -3 and it’s a quadratic it would just be (x+3)(x+3). If you re-FOIL this, then you get 6 as the mx value.

Are these gonna be on every test?

I guess these are US version questions , I am a international and I had none of these questions

These are from form 67c if I remember correctly.

Sent from my HTC Glacier using CC

i’m international,too
was your last math question one involving complex number i??

For question number 1.

Option F:

x + 5 = -3

You said you substituted either 2 or -8 for x.

when substituting “-8” for “x” in the equation shown in option F, it checks out. So how do we know that this is not the answer?
