Indian citizen
Main college choices are UC Berkeley, Cornell, Stanford and Johns Hopkins
I have given SAT once, got a score of 2040. I will be giving it again, and assume I’ll get a 2200+ score. Also will be giving Subject Tests.
Got 80% in 9th, 93% in 10th, 85% in 11th and 95% in 12th.
I’ve started 2 organizations on my own, an NGO and a web designing company.
I’ve done many volunteering projects with social organizations, including the UN Save Kids Lives campaign.
I’ve won 3 Gold Medals as the Best Delegate in different Model United Nations, and have done a lot of debating.
Played tennis for 12 years.
I’ll be doing a biology undergrad major.
Do you need financial aid? Scores too low for the schools listed. Broaden and consider some state unis.
International students have a much harder time than domestic students in applying to colleges in America; the same often goes for financial aid. Your scores are below average for even domestic students, and often times as an international you’ll only have your scores to go off of as a way to prove your academic ability. Your ECs don’t prove much for your interest in a Biology degree, either.
So, I’d advise the same as sgopal2; broaden your choices and aim lower. While your scores aren’t as competitive as where you’re aiming, they’re more than enough for many other great state schools in your degree. Do some research! Find somewhere the fits you that you’re sure you’ll get in.
Your scores are too low for those schools. Get realistic and aim for some more reasonable schools unless you’re the #1 tennis player in your country after playing for 12 years. Are you?
How can you assume you’ll bump your scores up 200+ points?
Make your list with that 2040. If your score does jump by 200 points, all the best for you, and then your reaches will be matches, and your matches will be high likelies. If you don’t make that jump, you’ll still have a workable list. Win-win.
A key question for internationals is: are you full pay or do you need financial aid?
Hey Guys, thanks for your opinions and advice I really appreciate it. Two main points :
- The 2040 wasn't my best effort. I was getting a good 2200+ score in all my mocks but on the day of the exam I suddenly had fits of nervousness and blanked out :( I know the situation completely now, and will go more prepared the next time.
- I can afford full pay and have all financial support. I'll still apply for scholarships, but I can afford the pay in case I don't get any aid.
If you can afford to be full pay, apply for MERIT AID, but NOT for "financial aid’. It’ll make things easier.
Even if you can get 2200, make your list based on that 2040.
In addition, consider any school with less than 30% admit rates as “reach”, automatically (for anyone, yourself or anyone else).
