This weekend will mark the halfway point (3rd of 6 auditions) for my son. He has been lucky with repertoire - he can play some combination of the same sonata, etude, two excerpts and extra piece (Bach cello suite) at all of his auditions. He’s working on a concerto movement to play with his school orchestra in May, but it wasn’t quite ready for auditions. I think bassists get off easy when it comes to repertoire.
I am more exhausted by the constant feeling of dread that he won’t get in anywhere than by the process itself. Very real possibility for my kid who did not seem to be heading towards a music major a year ago. He’s obviously not aiming for top programs, but it’s possible that he still aimed too high and even the local public won’t take him. Maybe I’ll feel better after getting the first results (as early as Friday night!)
@music2023 thank you for that burst of comedy relief regarding the baby. Much appreciated. Reading this thread is getting my anxiety even higher up. (I’m the one in this family with panic attacks/anxiety) It’s hard enough worrying if S is prepared, thinking about all the money, sadly reflecting on how little time I have left with him and then thinking about the travel, which for me, driving is like the fifth circle of hell. Get me on a plane anytime. But it’s not practical (or affordable) for our schools so driving Midwest in sub zero temps it is… I was watching the news last night looking at all the temps in the cities S is looking at colleges and it was worse than here. Yikes! Actually went online to replace his clothes lost at All-State and the sale was called a Polar Vortex sale. Is that an omen? Thought he would have dropped a school or two more. He was adamant 8 was too much so I let him drop one. Then he didn’t pass his second pre-screen so down to 6. One was local for scholarship so he has five left. After hearing DePauw is heavy party/Greek-dominated I thought for sure he would cancel but surprisingly he didn’t even though he has never seen it. The bright spot is our longest drive gets us a chance to see a Mozart night at the Cleveland Symphony after his audition. Looking forward to that.
@akapiratequeen I don’t drink but I’m about to join you for the Bourbon.
