Help paying for college?

I recently got admitted into Johns Hopkins, but was not given very much financial aid (about $6,000 for a $65,000 tuition). On top of my sister who is also in college, the total cost of our schooling would consist of around 40% of our family's income, which is something we would preferably not do. Is there anything I can do to get more financial aid from Johns Hopkins? Will contacting them and telling them of my situation help? Are there any big scholarships that I can still apply to? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The vast majority of scholarship $ come directly from the school. You can appeal the FA loan but I doubt you’ll get much more. If you have a better offer from a PEER school they may add $. Otherwise I hope you have other alternatives.

You certainly can ask. But JHU isn’t going to give you an addition $50,000.

What “situation” do you think will change their award? If you applied for need based aid (using the FAFSA and Profile, which the school requires), JHU has determined their award knowing already that you have a sister in college. They also know your family income and assets. Is there something NEW that they do NOT know?

“Big scholarships” at this point? Not likely. Most of the best scholarships are awarded directly by the colleges. The largest awards typically have early application deadlines which have long since past.

Hopkins is very clear on their website. They say “to the extent possible” they give need based aid.

There is a net price calculator on the Hopkins website. Did you run that before you applied?

If this option isn’t affordable to your family, then I do agree…I hope you applied to, and got accepted to more affordable options.
