Hi guys, I am an incoming freshman and my telebear Phase II is tomorrow morning. Basically, I want to take Math 1A in my first semester. And there seems to be two option for me.

One of them is taught by Haiman and the time slot fits my schedule perfectly. However, the bad thing is that All of the discussion for the class are FULL, despite the fact that there are still room for the lecture.

The other one is thought by Sethian and it starts at eight in the MORNING!!! It's it bad for a freshman to take a morning class that early. I used to have zero period in high school (I had to wake up at six). so waking up at seven-ish is not that bad.

So basically, is it possible for me to sign up for Haiman's lecture and hope for an opening in the discussion. Or should i just take the morning class? (and how bad is waking up early for morning class??)

Thanks a bunch guys.

If there is a discussion you think you can get in, go for it. You might be used to waking up early for zero period in high school, but at college you are not in control of your sleep schedule. You may have a roommate that does not go to class until say noon, and keeps you up all night.

^
Thanks a lot for the quick reply.
But the thing is. Can I sign up for the class while being on the waitlist in one of the discussion (which are ALL FULL)? Can I go to class without a discussion until someone drop out from one of the discussion section?? Thanks

My understanding is that if there are more class slots than discussions, they’ll usually open up another discussion section to accommodate any overflow.

I’m pretty sure I remember someone saying that they’ll open up more discussion sections later. Just sign up for the class now. For sure they’re going to make more space. Otherwise there would be a bunch of people like you without a discussion section haha

Well basically, so far all of the people who signed up for the class did get a discussion section (356 people signed up for the lecture and 356 people total are in the discussion sections). So Would they really open up an extra discussion? What if it could affect my entire schedule since I don’t even know when the discussion section is going to be? I am kinda scared because I would rather be safe (and sleep deprived) then sorry (having a lecture without a discussion)

Thanks a lot guys. Really appreciate all the help and advice

bump
Please help. THanks a lot guys

hopefully we get our classes lol.

usually if you are enrolled in lecture, you’re most likely gonna get into a discussion. for some classes i’ve taken we have like 30 or more people enrolled in lecture but not in discussion, coz they are all full, and they just open up 2 more discussion sessions for everyone that doesnt have one. however this situation happened in psych and humanity classes, so not so sure for math.

from experience though, if you are enrolled in lecture, you’re pretty safe, they usually try to make sure everyone gets a discussion session if they are in lecture. wait in fact, my friend took math54 last semester and he was in the same situation as you, in lecture without discussion, i never really asked him what happened or did they open up new sessions, but he ended finishing the class so i guess they did. generally it’s not a problem.
