Hello everyone,
This is my first post and I’m trying to get multiple opinions on this and but I wanted to ask for some advice regarding course selection. So I failed a 2 credit class by a measly few points and the teacher was incredibly strict and refused to give back points for most of the exams. But because of this I can’t take any of my classes for next year and have to be held back for it. The major does not offer this class over the summer or any other time of the year. My question is what path so you think would be the best for me to take. My counselor said a minor would be good but I was wondering if anyone had any advice for maybe a good minor or another path. I am also an international student so I was wondering if anyone had advice on maybe taking classes part time especially if there is a way for international students to pay less. I do not want to pay more than needed so any advice with this is appreciated. Major is nursing.
Unfortunately, international students on an F-1 or J-1 visa are required to maintain a full-time course load except in very limited circumstances. (https://internationalservices.georgetown.edu/students/f-1/partenroll). If you want to save on tuition, the best way would be to take time off from college until you can re-take the class.
Alternatively, would you be able to take this course at another college over the summer and count it towards your major? That’s an option visa-wise, if you can find another college and your college will accept the credits.
If you do need to be in college all of next year, and your schedule would be completely open except for this one class that you need to repeat, then your counselor’s suggestion of using that time to fulfill the requirements for a minor does make sense. It also might make sense to just change your major to something that you can complete that doesn’t have such a rigid program of study.
What is your major? What other interests to you have?
Hello. Thank you for your reply. I also thought of doing a major during this free time. I am doing nursing and this is the first time in my academic career that I had failed a class so I’m at a loss of what to do. But since I need to maintain my status I need to be full time. I believe I can manage doing a double major since everyone else I’ve spoken to at my school said that just passing the junior year courses is the difficult part and that senior year courses are easier. However, I am just kinda scared I’ll fail again.
Since it is the one nursing class that needs your attention, think about taking only the minimum number of credits needed to keep your status. Find out if any of those classes could be pass/fail or if they must be taken for a letter grade. Talk with the nursing program about good second majors or minors that would help you in your future career as a nurse.
