HELP! Rutgers or UMD?

I got accepted to Rutgers New Brunswick and University of Maryland College Park and am waitlisted at Villanova. I really want to go to Villanova but have to choose another in the meantime.

I want to go for Finance so anything would be appreciated. :-)

UMD.

Smith School of Business.

yeah, are you in the business school already?? UMD is considered better at finance than the other two. 18th in the country I think.

I'm not in the business school yet I'd still have to apply but I would be in the Markets and Society program which I think is like a pre-business school thing.

That is good and is the program route that is best for getting into business later. It will be junior year when you get in though and that only if you have a decent GPA. Weigh that in. Current students here can probably answer whether it is a big deal or not better than I can.

Just as a heads up. some people didn't apply for business when they made their application. Someone at UMD was saying if you have a 1300 and above and want to switch to business you can by review as long as you do it soon. If you do have a 1300 you may just want to e-mail them and say hey, can I switch to the business school and asked to be reviewed.

yeah rutgers is the same way you apply for your junior year. but I feel like this pre-business thing at maryland will get me on track opposed to just going to rutgers and taking random courses in hopes of getting into the business school.

do you think location has anything to do with it? rutgers is right near new york while umd is near dc.

I don't know the travel situation up in NJ but i don't think Rutgers is as close to NYC as UMD is to DC. UMD is said to be 7 miles from DC. DC is very simple to get to from UMD.
As you can see on the map http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm
UMCP is listed as college Park U-of-MD on the green line. You get on there from the campus and take the few stops and you are in DC a couple stops from there you are in the heart of DC. It is really easy and simple. I don't know if NJ has a public transit like DC does to its suburbs. Both places, DC and NYC, are great for internships. UMD is closer to Baltimore than Rutgers is to NY I think but again I am not to familiar with the NJ area. UMD has two great cities right there. Baltimore is harder to reach because it is much easier with a car.

Post this up in the college selection board also and in the Rutgers board too to get a variety of opinions.

okay thanks :-)

yeah I already posted it in the rutgers board and I've gotten nothing

yeah, thats cause they have nothing on the UMD...CP. yeah.

haha. I just wish this decision would come to me in a vision or something

OK then lets compare

Rutgers
Overall ranking 60
Peer assessment rating 3.3
Business overall 77th

Finance Ranking-??? Not top 25, i only have top 25

UMD
Overall ranking 55
Peer Assessment Rating 3.7
Buiness ranking- 22nd

Finance ranking 22nd

Which school has a better school spirit- UMD
Which school is bigger on sports- UMD
Which school won 4 national tourneys this year- UMD
Top 20 party school along with superior academics balanced by DC 20 minutes away and a businiess program designed for students to enter the business school later- UMD

*Note everything is factual yet might be biased on opinions on the bottom. I don't think rutgers has a sports seen quite like UMD because no one does. UMD ranked number 1 in students packing the stadium by princeton review. I don't know much about rutgers but US news considers UMD better Overall, in business overall by a decisive margin, better in finance(i don't know how much because i only got top 25).

hah, like 5 minutes before I read your post I made my decision.

and it's....

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND!

(unless of course villanova accepts me off of the waitlist and then I will be in a whole nother pickle)

Thats Great! I just have to say wait for other opinions too. As some have noticed here I don't like giving WAY to much advice because I am new to this stuff too BUT I honestly believe UMD is better for you. Now I would think this over for a day or so and make sure to wait for another opinion. :D But I think you are making the right decision :D

You don't live in NJ do you? Do you live in MD?

Oh I have been thinking about this decision for the past week and asking everyone I have ever met for their opinion haha.

I do live in NJ though

If you came to this decision over a long period of time it is most likely correct. After thinking about PSU and Wisconsin I felt UMD was right because of the costs and the programs I was in. I haven't thought twice about it yet. I am very happy with going to Maryland. Only thing if money is tight you may want to think Rutgers but be sure to tell those in the other threads you are from NJ unless money isn't to big of an issue. I think UMD is a far better business school. The dean seems very passionate about moving UMD-smith up the rankings till it hits the top.

Good luck, i hope to see you at UMD next year.

money isn't an issue at all really. my parents agreed to pay for all of rutgers, and then if I went somewhere else, they'd just pay however much it would be for me to go to Rutgers. I've seen "the homemade spreadsheet" so I know how much I'll owe at the end of 4 years and I can live with it.
