Hi guys. I am an incoming freshman to university of california, irvine. I was wondering, would counselors not like it if I told them I wanted to transfer to a different school and wanted their help in the transfer process?? My dad would rather have me not ask them because he believes that counselors, like students, have college pride. However, I didn't think it would matter.

Can anyone justify my beliefs or my dad's? Thank you! :)

I think that mostly depends on your guidance counselor’s personality. Make sure that you want to transfer first. If you want to leave, its not like she can force you to stay. Ask nicely, tell her that this school is not for and you want to follow your dreams and…

If you really want to ask advice from the counsellor, consider rephrasing your words. Instead of saying leaving the university, say, “try other options for my career”. This will make your conversation more positive.

+1 for giving UCI a chance… sounds like you’re going in with a bad attitude, and if that’s the case it’s going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. I’d at least let school start before you start thinking about a transfer… (side note, if your goal is another UC, most only accept junior transfers.)

Back to the original question: Even if they aren’t thrilled at the idea of you wanting to transfer, I honestly can’t think of any negative effect it could have on you. It’s just a counselor, it’s not like they control your grades or anything. But it’ll probably come across better if you at least give the school a chance first, especially it UCI hasn’t even started yet…

Lots of students transfer every year for lots of reasons. The counselors are used to doing their part. Just don’t expect them to do your research on other programs for you…that’s not their job.
