Help! Syracuse or University of Maryland

I got accepted by both UMD College Park and Syracuse. Now I have no idea where to go.

To me, location, weather and tuition don’t matter that much. Especially since I’m a transfer student I won’t be staying for that long. All I want to know is which school has a better reputation and does better in the field.

PS. Psychology major.

hi! Personally, I was in the same predicament as you, they both accepted me. I chose Syracuse class of 19. Syracuse has a better reputation when it comes to being well-known. They work closely with universities like Harvard and MIT, they are a non-profit private college, and they receive a large amount of donations which contribute towards research purposes. I believe that Syracuse would have better resources to provide you a great education in your major.

My major: Electrical Engineering

I really hope you picked SU

My son also was accepted to UMD, but feels it is a little too large for him. We are still waiting to hear from SU.but he would choose it over UMD for that reason. I will be honest, though, UMD has a little better reputation. It is ranked a bit higher than SU in just about everything. That said, they are pretty close in ranking and reputation and you should pick the one where you feel the best fit.

“They work closely with universities like Harvard and MIT…”

What does this mean?

Actually my S, in engineering, has been very frustrated by the LACK of funding for paid research positions, both during the school year and summer, and this was confirmed by his advisor. He had had a very difficult time even getting responses from research professors in the school, and he is a dean’s list student every semester. I have never heard about affiliations with MIT or Harvard. UM has overall has higher rankings in most published surveys. I do not agree that SU has better resources, but I can’t comment in your intended major. IMHO both schools are very good and the ultimate decision for you should be based where you see yourself as the best fit, both academically and socially.

My daughter was admitted to SU today with a Dean’s Scholarship, $10k/year. I think she’s staying with her first choice, though, Maryland. Bittersweet for me because I’m an SU alum!
