I am applying to an Ivy league school that asks if I have any relatives that have attended the institution (yes or no) and then to list their names. How do I get out of this. I do not want to go into details, but I would really like to leave that area blank. In short my relatives that attended the institution would only hurt me (recent bad karma) and I would much rather be judged on my own merits. What went on had nothing to do with me but if they know I am related they will certainly pass on me. Am I required to mark the "yes" box and list relatives? I know usually relatives (legacy) help, but not in my case. It seems so unfair. :(

That’s an interesting situation. Is it a parent or a further removed relative?

Check yes, but write N/A? That might seem sketchy though. Just fill in No, it’s not like they’re going to check your backgrounds to clarify that you in fact do not have any relatives that attend(ed) such Ivy.
