I'm freaking out. I wrote all my Tufts supplemental essays within the required word limits, and when I went to the supplement online, instead of allowing students to upload a document, THEY GIVE CHARACTER COUNTS! Did Tufts totally lie about word count? 250 words DOES NOT EQUAL 1300 CHARACTERS*INCLUDING SPACES AND PUNCTUATION.

As you can tell, I'm extremely worried. There is NO WAY I'm redoing my essays*I worked so so hard on them, and they're great. I even emailed Tufts admissions my question.

Why do other colleges allow you to upload a document? Do I need to rewrite them? I'm on the verge of tears here.

A lot of other colleges use character count on the application. 250 word count is approximate. You should really have looked at the application first before starting to write. But I’m sure it’s not half of your essay that doesn’t fit. It’s probably a sentence or so. Take a deep breath and look at it again. There should be a way to take some words out by expressing your view in a different way. You don’t have to change the whole essay just few places. If you’re having trouble doing this ask your English teacher for help. I remember my son had this problem with some schools too. I’m pretty sure Yale had a character count on their short answers.

But the website still said the word limit. The supplement was first released yesterday. I find this utter b.s. because the ESSAYS THEMSELVES were released far far in advance of the supplement itself. I figured I’d get a head start and write my essays, which were ALL WITHIN THE REQUIRED WORD LIMITS. Now I have to cut them down more because Tufts decides not to allow essay uploads like most other prestigious colleges like Chicago, Emory, Michigan, and Cornell? I don’t understand this!

Calm down. You have tons of time. My kid didn’t upload the Tufts application until January. I know it’s hard to believe now, but almost every essay can be improved by being shorter. I’m not sure what you mean by not allowing essay uploads since as far as I remember my son was able to upload all his applications the same way except for Georgetown which we ended up sending by snail mail since their computer system was so archaic. Character count is a pretty common limit, may as well get used to it now.
